First controllers for PCIe Gen5 coming in 2022

Although PCI Express Gen4 is only slowly making progress in the classic consumer sector, the release of the latest standard is already in the starting blocks. It has now become known that the manufacturer Silicon Motion is working on new SSD controllers that will support PCI Express Gen5. A release is to follow in 2022.

PCIe Gen5 is still coming this year

Although Silicon Motion’s controller for the new standard is not expected until next year, the first platforms that support the interface are still expected to hit the market in 2021. Experts are already promising a possible doubling of the transfer rate of previous NVMe SSDs, which rely on PCIe Gen4. We are talking about a blazing fast 16 GB/s when four lanes are available. That the introduction of PCIe Gen5 will soon follow is already an open secret in the professional field. So it is only a matter of time until we as normal end customers can take a look at the first SSDs with the new standard. We can probably expect the matching controller from Silicon Motion in the third or fourth quarter of 2022.
