Fujifilm X-S 20: mid-range DSLM camera with strong autofocus and webcam function

Fujifilm’s affordable mid-range DSLM camera X-S 10 finally gets a successor. With the Fujifilm X-S 20, the manufacturer has introduced an exciting APS-C camera that combines strong features with a long battery life and a webcam function.

Thanks not least to its affordable price, but also to its strong features, Fujifilm’s X-S 10 APS-C camera enjoyed enormous popularity. Now the manufacturer has introduced its successor, the Fujifilm X-S 20, which is a big step up in all respects.

The camera relies on an X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor in APS-C format, which resolves with 26.1 megapixels. While this isn’t the manufacturer’s latest sensor, it does have the X-Processor 5 working under the hood for image processing, which we already know from the manufacturer’s more expensive X-T5 system camera.

For example, it relies on AI technologies to improve image quality, uses the efficient HEIF file format, and reduces power consumption. As a result, the camera has the same smart autofocus as the X-T5 along with object-oriented scene recognition based on artificial intelligence.

Developed using Deep Learning technology, the algorithm not only detects and tracks people’s faces and eyes, but also captures animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, airplanes and trains.

Also included is an IBIS (In Body Image Stabilizer) that can compensate the image by up to 7 stops. Fujifilm has also reworked the battery: up to 750 shots are now possible thanks to the new NP-W235 battery, which is more than twice as many pictures as its predecessor.

All of this is housed in a compact 127.7mm x 85.1mm x 65.4mm body that weighs just 491 grams. Due to the compact design, however, the DSLM camera only has room for one SD memory card, but now in UHS-II format, it allows for faster speeds.

What has always set Fujifilm apart is its unique film simulations, which cannot be found with any other manufacturer. A full 19 of them (such as Velvia, Provia or Eterna) are used in the Fujifilm X-S 20.

For vloggers and filmmakers

Another advantage comes when filming, as the Fujifilm X-S 20 now shoots video in 6.2K resolution at up to 30 frames per second. In 4K, even 60 frames per second are possible. And that’s with 4:2:2 at 10 bits and 360 Mbit/s.

Vloggers, on the other hand, benefit from additional special features via the PASM wheel to select a Vlog mode that, for example, quickly allows the background to be blurred or enables a smooth focus transition between a person and an object in a Product Priority mode – which is supposed to be particularly suitable for unboxing or product videos. Another advantage is the 3.5 mm jack, which can be used to connect headphones or a microphone.

Another practical feature is that the X-S 20 can be quickly and easily connected to a PC or notebook as a webcam. Simply connect it via USB-C cable and you’re ready to go. No software or other accessories are required.

Price and Availability

The Fujifilm X-S 20 system camera is scheduled to find its way into stores at the end of June 2023 at a recommended retail price of €1,399 for the body. Alternatively, the camera is available as a kit in combination with the 15-45 mm lens for around 1,500 euros. More details can be found on the official product website of the manufacturer.
