General Motors announces Corvette with electric motor

Do you fancy a sporty muscle car from the USA, but want to do without one for the sake of the environment? General Motors may soon have the right solution for you. The renowned car manufacturer wants to launch its iconic Corvette as an electric car.

Step by step to all-electric driving pleasure

Currently, you can only buy the sleek car with a long snout as a classic combustion engine. General Motors, however, has big plans for the sports car and wants to equip it with an electric drive. Before that happens, however, they want to create a soft transition. This is to be created in the form of a version with a plug-in hybrid engine. If the premiere is successful, General Motors would like to launch its all-electric Corvette. The muscle car with the mixture of electric and combustion engine is to be launched as early as 2023. At least this is what Mark Reuss, CEO of General Motors, announced on the LinkedIn platform.

It is questionable why the company is not putting all its eggs in one basket and launching a fully electric model straight away. After all, in view of the expiring innovation bonus, interest in the sports car with plug-in hybrid engine is likely to be very low in this country. Apparently, this seems to be different in the USA. It is possible that the Corvette will then act as a real drawing card for General Motors. After all, the automaker plans to convert its entire portfolio to electric mobility by 2035. The muscle car could encourage fans of high-performance cars in particular to move away from the combustion engine.

Electric sports car market is competitive

Unfortunately, General Motors is a bit late with its plans. After all, the competition has by no means been asleep. With their Porsche Taycan and Mustang Mach-E models, manufacturers such as Porsche and Ford already have two sporty runabouts on the starting grid. And these are already fully electric. But the first information about the upcoming E-Corvette already reads quite well. For example, it will have all-wheel drive. In the field of electric mobility, dual motors are always considered a guarantee for high speeds and a sporty driving style. General Motors’ own platform for electric cars, which is to be called Ultium, sounds exciting. This is supposed to be able to specifically recover energy and use it for heating. The end result should be a longer range.
