CES 2022: Sony announces development of e-cars

Game console, TV, sound system, and and… The list of technical devices that Sony offers its customers is really long. But now the Japanese electronics company wants to conquer an entirely new segment – electric mobility. At the CES, the inventor of the Walkman and PlayStation announced that they had founded a new branch of the company, “Sony Mobility Inc.”. This is to do nothing less than develop electric cars.

An e-SUV called Vision S

The world public first got to see the E-SUV dubbed “Vision S” on January 6, 2020. Following the presentation of the concept, both Sony and automotive fans were extremely impressed.

So it is hardly surprising that Kenichiro Yoshida, CEO of Sony, has decided to continue development until it is ready for series production. He announced this at the CES 2022, but the words were also followed by actions. So he spoke not only of the foundation of the new subsidiary “Sony Mobility Inc.” On top of that, he presented the latest prototype of the e-car Made by Sony.

Many question marks about performance

At its presentation, Sony emphasized first and foremost the sophisticated sensor technology that is said to lie dormant in the Vision S. A total of 40 sensors are to ensure that the vehicle occupants are allowed to feel maximum safety. Of course, the professional in consumer electronics does not want to do things by halves when it comes to entertainment. Here, too, the company wants to rely on a sophisticated conglomerate of sensors. All in all, the Vision S will have more than 100 sensors.

When it comes to performance, Sony is still keeping a very low profile. What we know so far is that the E-SUV will be equipped with 2x 200 kW electric motors. The total of 400 kW should allow the heavy vehicle to reach a speed of up to 180 km/h. That’s all about the performance. That is all we know about the performance details that we received from Sony. Information about the battery power or the maximum range of the 2.5-ton e-SUV will certainly follow soon.
