Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV: Luxury goes electric

In 2023, a Maybach will still stand for one thing above all: pure luxury. And that will not change even with an all-electric engine. The upcoming Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV has now been presented to the global public with the corresponding luxury note. However, one important question remains unanswered.

EQS 680 SUV comes with typical Maybach luxury

Meanwhile, the electric car market is extremely broad. For example, you can now get an all-electric car with good equipment for as little as around 10,000 euros, as the present at the Shanghai auto show BYD Seagull makes clear. At the other end of the scale, however, the range is also increasingly growing and thriving. Mercedes-Maybach, for example, has now publicly unveiled its first all-electric luxury body. The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV uses the electric motor-equipped S-Class from the long-established Stuttgart-based company as its base. To live up to the Maybach name, however, the base is still being upgraded here and there with costly finishing touches.

Especially with expensive accessories made of chrome and other trinkets, they have by no means spared here. Illuminated running boards for a befitting and comfortable entrance and modified taillights also make the difference. The changes to the interior technology, on the other hand, are limited. At least for the driver. Here, too, the gigantic MBUX Hyperscreen with a total of three screens is available. However, to make it clear that you are in a Maybach at the wheel, there is a special animation when you start the car. Fine color accents with rose gold then also make the rotary instruments inside a little more sophisticated.

Focus on the back seat

In experience, the Maybach is a vehicle whose owners do not drive themselves. In the noble brand of Mercedes, you are only befitting your station when you let yourself be driven. For this reason, it is not surprising that not much has changed in the driver area compared to the EQS SUV presented in April 2022. Rather, Maybach is clearly focusing on the rear. Here there are two large screens, each measuring 11.6 inches. This is clearly a response to the BMW i7, which offers a huge cinema screen for people sitting in the back seat. But the people sitting in the back can’t just be entertained by the screens. On top of that, they should be able to access the navigation system here, for example, and thus change the destination, among other things. What’s not really surprising is the high quality of the seats.

These are not only covered with high-quality leather and rely on applications in natural wood. On top of that, they offer all kinds of luxury. These should not only be able to offer heated seats, but also ventilation and massage functions. The cooling compartment is supposed to take care of the physical well-being and the one or other bottle of expensive cold drink. This can be purchased by choosing the First-Class equipment variant. Here, a center console is used that extends from the driver’s cabin to the rear. It contains a refrigerated compartment and two fold-out tables. The silver champagne goblets can be ordered at the same time. Various ports, such as USB-C and HDMI, can also be used to connect different devices for charging or image transmission.

Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV is a sound miracle

The features around sound sound particularly exciting. So it comes as little surprise that the noble body comes with a powerful sound system that counts a total of 15 speakers. The manufacturer even wants speakers installed in the seats. On top of that, Maybach has come up with something for the driving sound. The Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV offers passengers in the interior a special sound that can be individually adjusted. This should be particularly interesting for people who not only want to feel a lot of power in a car, but also hear it. According to the manufacturer, the sound depends on various parameters such as pressure on the accelerator pedal or the strength of the recuperation. In terms of driving comfort, the company also wants to leave nothing to be desired.

The standard air suspension is said to provide a smooth ride. This features continuous adjustment damping, which allows the ground clearance to be increased by up to 35 mm if required. Of course, the tried-and-tested rear-axle steering, which we already know from the EQS, is also used. This should make a fairly small turning circle of eleven meters possible even in the large Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV. The performance data also reads well. The 484 kW all-electric engine is supposed to catapult the car from 0 to 100 within 4.4 seconds. A top speed of 210 km/h is possible. Furthermore, the battery should allow a maximum range of 600 km. Through a charging power of 200 kW, it should take just under half an hour to fully charge the luxurious e-car.

Most important question about the Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV remains open

Of course, this all sounds like an absolute dream car. But with all the rapture surrounding the impressive equipment and technical data, it’s easy to forget the unanswered questions. The price of the luxury car in particular is still a big question mark. We are curious when Mercedes-Maybach will answer this.
