Google Pixel 8a leak reveals powerful specifications

The upcoming mid-range smartphone Google Pixel 8a comes with an astonishingly powerful set of features, at least according to a new leak that has revealed almost all the specifications of the new device. It speaks of a 120 Hz display and Tensor G3.

On May 14, 2024, Google will hold this year’s I/O 2024, where it will unveil the Pixel 8a, Android 15 and perhaps even other new products. The specifications of the Google Pixel 8a have now been leaked and promise a lot.

The leak comes from the website Android Authority, which bases the information on an insider source at Google. It states that the affordable mid-range smartphone will also feature a 120 Hz OLED display with a brightness of 1,400 nits and a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 pixels.

These specs largely correspond to those of the Pixel 8, with the difference that the 8a has a screen diagonal of 6.1 inches and is therefore slightly more compact. The Pixel 7a, on the other hand, only had a 90 Hz panel.

Tensor G3 and powerful cameras

It is also said that the Google Pixel 8a comes with the Tensor G3 chip, which also powers the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro (our test). This promises a significant increase in performance compared to the Pixel 7a, as the G3 chip has made noticeable gains thanks to the new 1 4 4 layout and faster clock rates – although it is still not one of the fastest smartphone chips.

However, it is said to be an adapted version of the Tensor G3, according to the Google Pixel 8a leak. This is said to be manufactured using the IPoP process (Integrated Package on Package), which according to Samsung is cheaper to produce, but also tends to generate slightly more heat.

However, the cameras are to be carried over unchanged from the Pixel 7a, which is a slight disappointment. Accordingly, a 64 MP main camera with Sony IMX787 and a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle camera would be used.

It is also interesting to note that the Pixel 8a is also expected to use DisplayPort support for the USB-C connection. Google only activated this for the Pixel 8 series just over a week ago. This means that the mid-range smartphone could also be used with an external monitor and make use of the planned desktop mode.

Unfortunately, the Google Pixel 8a leak does not reveal any details about the release or price. So we’ll have to be patient here until Google unveils it.
