Google Pixel 8a: Mid-range smartphone launches from 549 euros

Following the leaks of recent weeks and months, Google has now officially unveiled its new mid-range smartphone. The Google Pixel 8asits a 6.1-inch display that is 2,000 Nis bright, comes with modern features and AI cameras.

Google Pixel 8a: All information about the smartphone

The Pixel 8 family is growing in the form of the handy Google Pixel 8a. The smartphone is 152.1 mm high, 72.7 mm wide and 8.9 mm deep and weighs 188 grams. It has a 6.1-inch display with a refresh rate of 120 Hertz, a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 pixels and a brightness of up to 2,000 nits. The fingerprint sensor is integrated into the display.

The smartphone, which comes in four colors – Aloe (green), Bay (blue), Porcelain and Obisidian – is dust and water resistant to IP67 and has a scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 3 cover glass. The back has a matt finish and is said to be fingerprint-resistant, while the frame is made of matt aluminum.

As with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro (our test), the Google Tensor G3 is used as the chip, which promises good performance. Google provides it with 8 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB of system memory. It also offers seven years of system and security updates.

Strong features, good AI cameras

The Google Pixel 8a is equipped with Wi-Fi 6E including Bluetooth 5.3, 5G dual SIM support and NFC, comes with Android 14 and has a USB-C 3.2 port for charging. The battery has a capacity of 4,492 mAh and should offer “more than 24 hours of battery life”, as is typical for Google. However, wireless charging is also possible.

As in the Pixel 7a, the main camera has a resolution of 64 megapixels. It offers an aperture of f/1.89 with a 1/1.73-inch sensor. There is also a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.2) and a 13 MP selfie camera (f/2.2).

The familiar AI functions of the other Pixel devices are also on board. These include the magic eraser or the ability to select the best picture for each individual face in group photos. Circle to Search is also included, with which an object can be circled on the screen and then searched for.

Price and availability

The Google Pixel 8a is now available for pre-order in the Google Store and starts with 128 GB of storage for 549 euros. Doubling this to 256 GB increases the price to 609 euros, making the Pixel 8a more expensive than the Pixel 8 at the moment.
