Holoride: Audi models to be equipped with Holoride VR entertainment system

You will be able to enjoy VR entertainment in the back seat of new Audi models as early as summer 2022. The Holoride VR entertainment system will allow you to play games that adapt to the movements of the vehicle, among other things.

Audi models with Holoride from summer 2022

Audi had presented the “rear seat VR system” Holoride for the first time at CES 2019. From summer 2022, it will finally go into series production. More precisely, all Audi models that roll off the production line from June 2022 will be equipped with Holoride.

Specifically, the automaker is talking about the Audi A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, Q8, e-tron and e-tron GT quattro models. Audi itself describes the VR solution as “Elastic Content”. At CES, they presented a demo of a Marvel game (Rockets Rescue Run) in which the spaceship shown in it moves in the same direction as the car when driving through a curve. Acceleration and braking processes of the game are also the same as those of the car.

At the same time, Holoride can also be used to create VR experiences in the back seat while driving, allowing users to marvel at dinosaurs, display other interactive content or enjoy movies in VR, for example.

What do I need for Holoride?

To use the Holoride VR entertainment system from the Munich-based startup of the same name, which was founded by former Audi managers, you need two things. One is a vehicle that is compatible with the VR system, and the other is a compatible pair of VR glasses.

While the CES demo three years ago still showed up with an Oculus Rift, currently only the VR headset HTC Flow is compatible with Holoride. The car and VR glasses are connected via Bluetooth Low Latency. However, other VR systems should also be able to work with the technology. Whether the systems can be retrofitted in other models in the future and whether other VR headsets will be made compatible is still uncertain.
