Honor 50: Smartphone with 108 MP camera comes to Germany with Google services

The former Huawei subsidiary Honor finally returns to the German market with the Honor 50 smartphone, and that even includes Google services. At the same time, the device impresses with a 120 Hz display, a 108 megapixel main sensor and a fair price.

Honor 50 launches with Google services in Germany

Back in June the Honor 50 was presented to the public, at the same time the German launch of the device was already confirmed. The time has finally come at the beginning of November, when the new smartphone of the former Huawei subsidiary will finally be released in this country.

For two years now, Honor has belonged to Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology Co, Ltd and is thus no longer affected by the US embargo. Thus, Google services and an enabled 5G modem are finally available again.

However, the mid-range smartphone also scores with exciting technical specs. Here, Honor relies on a 6.57-inch FullHD+ Retina display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels and 120 Hz refresh rate, which is curved by 75 degrees.

5G is supported as well as Dual WLAN ax and Bluetooth 5.2. The battery holds 4,300 mAh and can be fully charged to 70 percent in 20 minutes at the wall socket thanks to fast charging technology with 66 watts. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G SoC works inside, which combines four powerful ARM Cortex-A78 processing cores with four frugal Cortex-A55. Honor also installs an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Strong cameras in the Honor 50

Honor relies on a quad camera at the back and installs a 108-megapixel main sensor, which is supported by an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera as well as a 2-megapixel macro camera and a 2-megapixel camera for depth shots.  Selfie fans will also be happy about the front-facing camera with a resolution of 32 megapixels.

The multi-video function is also exciting for video fans. Six different modes are available to simultaneously film a combination of up to three cameras (front and rear cameras combined). Alternating front-to-rear camera recording, DualView recording (front/rear camera simultaneously), Dual-View recording (from two rear cameras), picture-in-picture recording, time-lapse recording and slow-motion recording are all possible.

Honor 50

The Honor 50 is offered in Germany in two configurations. Once with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB in the colors “Midnight Black”, “Emerald Green” and “Honor Code”. There is also a variant with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB system storage in the colors “Midnight Black” and “Frost Crystal”.

It is a bit of a shame, however, that the more powerful Honor 50 Pro and the slimmed-down Honor 50 SE will not make it to Germany; these models are exclusively reserved for the Chinese market.

Inexpensive Honor 50 Lite presented

The Honor 50 SE is not coming, but we will get the Honor 50 Lite here, which reminds us of the Huawei nova 8i from the outside. Honor relies on a 6.67-inch LCD panel with 1080p resolution and a frame rate of 60 Hz.

A Snapdragon 662 serves as the SoC, while the 4,300 mAh battery can also be charged with up to 66 watts via USB-C. 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of system storage are available. In return, the cameras of the Honor 50 Lite sound quite exciting on paper. The setup looks like this:

  • 64 MP (f/1.9) main camera
  • 8 MP (f/2.4)wide-angle camera
  • 2 MP (f/2.4) depth sensor
  • 2 MP (f/2.4) macro camera (4cm distance)
  • 16 MP (f/2.0) front camera

Prices and availability

The Honor 50 launches in Germany on November 12. It starts at an MSRP of 529 euros for the model with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB ROM, while an MSRP of 599 euros is called for the larger model. In pre-sales from November 2 to 15, 2021, the HONOR 50 will launch in a bundle with free HONOR Earbuds 2 Lite worth 99.90 euros.

The Honor 50 Lite will be available in Germany from the beginning of December at an RRP of 299 Euros.
