Ikea presents smart socket at a bargain price

The smart home segment at Ikea is growing and thriving. The Swedish furniture store now has a new smart socket in the pipeline. It goes by the name of Tretakt and is primarily designed to impress with its attractive price.

Ikea launches successor to Trådfri

If you’re not a dyed-in-the-wool expert on Ikea’s product portfolio, it’s easy to get confused by the sometimes unconventional names. With Tretakt, the Swedish furniture store now has a new addition up its sleeve, as our colleagues at Golem.de found out when asked by the company. As a result, the previous smart socket Trådfri is likely to be discontinued in the long term and replaced by the new smart socket.

Apparently, some stores already have the product, which was originally planned for April 2024, on offer. And at an extremely fair price. The socket alone costs 7 euros. If you buy it as a set with the corresponding switch called Rodret, you pay a total of 10 euros. Considering the individual price of the switch is already 6 euros, that’s a real bargain.

Tretakt is smaller and cheaper

The ball started rolling after a rumor about the new switch was spread on Reddit. As this has now turned out to be a fact, the product details of the leak can also be believed with a clear conscience. The Tretakt is said to be much smaller than the Trådfri. A switch on the socket itself enables it to be switched on and off. Zigbee 3.0 is used to integrate it into your own smart home. But it’s not just the housing that is shrinking, the price is too. The Swedish furniture retailer charged 13 euros for its previous smart socket. This naturally raises the question of how the price difference comes about. One reason could be compatibility.

When asked by Golem.de, Ikea initially clarified that the Tretakt is not compatible with the previous Trådfri series hub. Instead, a hub from the Dirigera series is required. However, the Swedish product page for the socket now casts doubt on this information. After all, you can read there that Tretakt is also supposed to be compatible with the Trådfri gateway. If this is indeed the case, there would no longer be any reason for the old Trådfri socket to exist. In the meantime, Golem.de has contacted Ikea again to clear up the confusion. But even without a smart home connection, the Tretakt is a really practical and, above all, inexpensive gadget, especially when bundled with the practical switch.
