Ikea Symfonisk 2nd generation bookshelf speaker available

The Swedish furniture store is expanding its product line with a new Ikea Symfonisk bookshelf speaker. The now second generation of the speaker has undergone a technical update in particular and offers an affordable entry into the Sonos sound world.

Ikea Symfonisk bookshelf speaker: second generation already available

Without much announcement, the Swedes have added the second generation of the Ikea Symfonisk bookshelf speaker to their range. The smart combination of shelf and speaker is offered in white and black, although so far only the white model can be ordered and is available in stores of the furniture store. The black variant is to follow shortly.

However, the first-generation speaker will continue to be offered for sale. Purely in terms of dimensions, nothing has changed. The speaker comes in a rectangular case with dimensions of 310 x 150 x 100 mm. It can be attached to the wall with a corresponding wall mount and therefore be used as a bedside shelf, for example. It can also be used in both portrait and landscape format.

The well-known shelf WiFi speaker is already the second Symfonisk model, which is now offered in an updated, second generation. The new edition of the speaker-table lamp combination made the start just recently.

The Swedes do not reveal what technical improvements are in the new edition of the Ikea Symfonisk bookshelf speaker. Presumably, the inner workings of the speaker have been revised, which should benefit the sound.

What the Ikea Symfonisk bookshelf speaker can do

The bookshelf WIFI speaker relies on an unobtrusive design that should blend in nicely with the living space. All Symfonisk speakers, including the picture frame and speaker launched in mid-2021, use Sonos technology and ecosystem and are controlled in the same way as classic Sonos speakers.

The biggest special features of the system are, among other things, the particularly well-tuned multi-room system and the support of over 100 different music streaming services. The speakers are mainly controlled via the Sonos app, which is available for Android and iOS, among others.

Apple Airplay 2 is supported by all Symfonisk devices, but not Google Cast or Bluetooth. Furthermore, other compatible speakers can be used in multi-room mode via Airplay 2. The Symfonisk speakers can also be operated via WLAN or with an Ethernet cable.

Two bookshelf speakers can also be used as a stereo pair, making them an ideal complement to a Sonos soundbar. Whether this is also possible in combination of the 1st and 2nd generation Symfonisk speakers is currently unclear.

Price and availability

The 2nd generation Ikea Symfonisk bookshelf speaker is available in white at the furniture store’s online store. With a price of 99.99 euros, it also represents the currently cheapest speaker in the Sonos cosmos. The black model is currently not available and will follow later.
