iPad Pro (2024) with OLED display: iPadOS 17.5 provides clues to new model

Rumors were already circulating at the beginning of March that Apple would be presenting new iPads this year. There was talk of an iPad Pro (2024) with an OLED display or new iPad Air variants. The new beta version for iPadOS 17.5 now contains references to a total of four new models, which could be officially unveiled as early as May.

iPad Pro (2024) and new Apple Pencil 3 on the way

Our colleagues at 9to5mac had the opportunity to try out the first beta version of iPadOS 17.5. This apparently provides indications of a total of four new iPad models that could be released soon.

Internally, these are called iPad16,3, iPad16,4, iPad16,5 and iPad16,6, which doesn’t reveal much about the devices at first. However, they are said to be the new iPad Pro (2024), which will be offered with a screen diagonal of 11 inches and 12.9 inches, with and without a 5G modem, which identifies the four new tablets.

According to the report, the firmware also reveals that these iPads will be equipped with new OLED displays. According to previous rumors, Apple will rely on a tandem structure and stack two OLED layers on top of each other, which would result in a higher maximum brightness, better durability and more economical displays. The 12.9-inch version is apparently to be manufactured exclusively by LG, while the 11-inch display will be cobbled together by LG and Samsung.

In terms of technology, the iPad Pro (2024) is expected to feature the M3 ARM chip and come close to the performance of the company’s own MacBook models, making it a convincing notebook replacement – especially in combination with a keyboard cover.

New Apple Pencil 3 discovered

IPadOS 17.5 also contains a reference to a new Apple Pencil 3, which features a new “squeeze” gesture, among other things. By squeezing the stylus, certain actions can be carried out in addition to the previous double tap.

The iPadOS beta also mentions a total of three squeeze gestures with a single, double and long squeeze. In addition, the new Apple Pencil will apparently be able to be located via the manufacturer’s “Find My” network.

The Apple Pencil 3 could then be launched together with the iPad Pro (2024) and the new iPad Air (2024) as early as May 2024. A new edition of the Magic Keyboard is also planned for May.
