Apple’s mobile operating system iOS 15.2 for iPhones will be released soon and comes up with some exciting innovations. In a newly published support document, Apple also reveals that there will be a repair history with detailed information about repairs already performed on the device.
iOS 15.2 with repair history
With iOS 15.2, you will probably be able to determine whether your cell phone repair shop has really only installed original spare parts when repairing the iPhone. This is made possible by the new repair history, which is to arrive with the upcoming OS update.
In the support document, Apple notes that the repair history with iOS 15.2 will mark original spare parts with the addition “Genuine Apple Part”, while spare parts from non-sanctioned sources will be given the addition “Unknown Part”.
Accordingly, there will be a new item called “Parts and Service History” in the iPhone settings under “Info”, which will only be displayed if the smartphone has already been repaired at least once. Depending on the iPhone version, information about the components used will also be displayed.
Focus on camera, display and battery
On the iPhone XR, XS, XS Max and newer, as well as the iPhone SE (2nd generation), it will be displayed whether the battery has been replaced. On iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13 models, it will indicate if the battery or display has been replaced. On the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models, it is additionally displayed whether the battery, the display or the camera has been replaced.
If the iPhone is connected to the Internet after using the service, tapping on the part displays further information, such as the service date on which the part was installed.
If “Unknown Part” is given in the process, this can have several reasons, according to Apple:
- The part was replaced with a part that is not an original Apple part.
- The part was already installed in another iPhone.
- The part does not work as expected.
In the coming year, Apple wants to finally allow iPhone owners to repair their own smartphones. In particular, the iPhone of the 12th as well as the 13th generation should be able to be repaired by the customer himself. But other products are to follow.
