iPhone SE (2020): Current hardware in iPhone 8 case

Finally there is a new iPhone SE! Four years after the first iPhone SE, Apple is now giving the compact iPhone an update. It can be pre-ordered now and will be delivered from April 24th. The price starts at 479 Euro.

Even though the iPhone SE (2020) is still small, it is still larger than the original iPhone SE (2016). It is as big as the iPhone 8, and the shape also matches it, so that iPhone 8 cases also fit the iPhone SE (2020). Technically, however, it is significantly upgraded and comes with similar hardware as the iPhone 11.

Larger display and old safety technology

The iPhone SE (2020) uses a 4.7-inch LCD display with a resolution of 1,334 x 750 pixels (326 ppi) – just like the iPhone 8 – and is equipped with True Tone technology, Dolby Vision support and HDR10 playback.

Unlike current iPhones, Apple does not use Face ID face recognition for unlocking the iPhone SE (2020), but instead uses the older Touch ID sensor. This is certainly due to the cheaper technology, as the iPhone SE (2020) is a budget smartphone by Apple’s standards. Because the Touch-ID sensor takes up quite a bit of space on the front, the display ratio is of course smaller than in current top models.

Fast hardware of the current generation

The processor uses an A13 bionic chip, which is also found in the iPhone 11 models, and thus delivers more than enough performance for all current applications. It has access to three gigabytes of main memory and, depending on the model, 64 to 256 gigabytes of flash memory.

Only one main camera

Also on the camera you can see that Apple wanted to bring a cheap entry level model onto the market with the iPhone SE (2020). Instead of a two or three camera as in the iPhone 11 series, there is only a camera with 12 megapixels and an f/1.8 aperture on the back of the smartphone. The front camera on the other hand has a resolution of seven megapixels and an f/2.2 aperture.

More features

Even though Apple has long resisted NFC, the latest models have had it on board. This is the case with the iPhone SE (2020). For example, you can use Apple Pay.

Furthermore, the iPhone SE (2020) offers Wi-Fi 6 with 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5 and IP67 certification. The latter guarantees water and dust resistance. A 30-minute dive at a depth of up to one meter should be possible.

The battery of the Smartphone is kept very small with 1.821 mAh. Samsung, for example, has just introduced the Galaxy M21, a smartphone with 6,000 mAh, more than three times as much. The included 5-watt charger can also be criticized, as the smartphone could also be charged with an 18-watt charger, which would recharge the battery much faster. By the way, OnePlus even offers 30 watts of charging power in the new OnePlus 8 Pro – without cables!

Prices and availability

The new iPhone SE (2020) is now available for pre-order in white, black and red. It will be shipped from 24 April. Prices range between 479 and 649 euros, depending on the features.
