K|Lens One: The world’s first light field lens for SLR cameras

With the K|Lens One, the same-named company, which was founded in Saarbrücken in 2016 as a spin-off of the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science, has presented an innovative lens for SLR cameras. The light-field lens collects additional depth data, which opens up new possibilities in image processing.

K|Lens One launches on Kickstarter

The K|Lens One lens is by no means lightweight. Weighing in at a whopping 1.7 kg, the lens for SLR cameras comes in at an almost gigantic 253 mm in length. The reason for this is the innovative features, as the lens is capable of turning full-frame cameras into light field cameras. This makes it the first lens in the world that is capable of doing so. But what does that mean?

Images and videos captured using the K|Lens One have additional depth information in the form of light field data. This includes depth maps, point clouds and nine separate perspectives per shot.

This makes it possible, for example, to change the focus point after an image has been taken, to apply color grading to individual areas or to refocus images afterwards. This opens up almost endless creative possibilities that are not possible with a normal lens. It is also possible to change the perspective of a captured image within a certain range.

The first version of the K|Lens One, which incidentally is manufactured in Jena, Germany, by Carl Zeiss Jena, has a focal length of 80 mm and is compatible with all full-frame cameras with the help of different connectors. The funding is via the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. As part of the campaign, users can simply specify their own camera model.

Further features of the K|Lens One

The K|Lens One also offers everything that a good lens must be able to do. For example, the lens has two dials that can be used to set the aperture (between f/6.3 and f/19), as well as the focus distance (0.5 m – infinity). There are a total of 17 lenses in 13 groups inside the K|Lens One. The resolution of the lens is 45 megapixels.

By default, the K|Lens is compatible with F, E and EF mounts from Sony, Nikon and Canon. Adapters for L-, Z- and R-mounts are also available. Only X-mounts from Fujifilm cameras apparently go empty-handed.

In the center of the lens is a long image multiplier that projects up to 9 different perspectives of an image onto the sensor. This allows 3D images to be created even from normal, two-dimensional photos, which should be interesting in advertising, for example. 3D images can be output as point clouds, stereo photos, rendered 3D images or GIF files.

SeeDeep Software

The innovative SeeDeep software is included with the K|Lens One. It is needed to merge the nine recorded perspectives using the parallax effect, serves as a gallery and enables the creation of depth maps with just one mouse click.

Moreover, images can be easily converted with the help of the software for further processing in Photoshop or other image editing programs.

K|Lens One on Kickstarter

The K|Lens One has launched on Kickstarter. Those interested in the lens will have to spend at least 1,999 euros to secure the early-bird bundle. This represents a 45 percent discount, as the K|Lens One is actually supposed to be offered at an MSRP of 3,599 euros. The delivery is scheduled for August 2022.
