With the Tone Free series, LG has introduced three new Earbud models with unusual features. Besides active noise cancellation (ANC) including transparency mode, the Tone Free FP9, FP8 and FP5 offer a whisper mode, spatial audio and a disinfection function with UV light.
The features of the LG Tone Free FP9, FP8 and FP5
In many ways, the three models share a lot of the features. For example, all three variants come with IPX4 certification, which protects against sweat and rain. LG’s Tone Free FP9, FP8 and FP5 also share active noise cancellation (ANC) including transparency mode.
The dedicated whisper mode of the three integrated microphones is particularly exciting: It should be possible to hold one of the in-ear headphones close to the mouth to speak very quietly and still be understood.
Meridian Audio’s Spatial Audio implementation is supposed to provide high-quality, spatial sound. Compared to the previous models, the built-in drivers of the Tone Free earphones have been significantly improved for this purpose.
The entry-level model FP5 has a battery life of just under eight hours with deactivated ANC, while the two higher-priced models FP8 and FP9 last two hours longer. Wireless charging, on the other hand, is only supported by the LG Tone Free FP8, but not the top model.
To that end, the Tone Free FP9 are able to connect devices to the charging case via an AUX to USB-C cable, which passes the signal wirelessly to the Earbuds. Especially exciting for older devices.
Disinfection with the help of UV light
Most interesting is the feature of the two more expensive models, whose charging case is equipped with UVnano technology. This makes it possible to disinfect the earphones using UV light while the charging case is connected to the power outlet.
According to the manufacturer, this is said to kill 99.9 percent of all bacteria in just five minutes, minimizing the risk of inner ear infections. In addition, the FP8 and FP9 are coated with a medical-grade hypoallergenic ear gel that reduces the risk of skin irritation in the ear canal.
Prices and Availability
The LG Tone Free FP5, FP8 and FP9 are scheduled to ship later this month. All three variants are available in Charcoal Black and Pearl White, with the two more expensive models also available in Haze Gold.
LG has not yet commented on the prices, but the LG Tone Free DFP8W is already listed for a price of € 179.00 on Amazon.
