Meta AI will not be launched in the EU for the time being

Of course, AI also plays a major role at Meta. With Meta AI, the tech company plans to launch its own version of artificial intelligence soon. However, users in this country will probably not be able to enjoy the AI. The reason for this is the EU’s strict data protection laws.

Meta AI not EU-compatible

Artificial intelligence is currently on everyone’s lips. Pretty much every tech company wants to get involved in this promising technology. Apple, for example, recently presented its own version of AI with Apple Intelligence. Just like helpful chatbots such as ChatGPT, this will also be available within the EU. Meta, on the other hand, must stay away from this market.

The parent company behind Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp is failing to comply with EU law with Meta AI. According to the company, many features would be missing if the in-house AI were to be adapted to the EU’s legal framework. According to Meta, this would result in a “second-class experience”. The tech company is naturally “disappointed” about this.

That is understandable. After all, the EU is a large and important market for the company. According to the company, Meta AI’s focus is on training large language models with content shared on Facebook and Instagram. The press release that has now been issued reveals that this has been delayed until further notice, as the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) had requested this.

US company takes offense

This is of course a bitter loss for Meta. After all, the European market is also a very important one in the race for AI solutions. As the competition is already doing strong business in our climes, it will be difficult for Meta to catch up with the others. Meta is probably also aware of this. However, the tech group is communicating the loss for the EU to the outside world.

For example, there is talk of a “step backwards for European innovation” if Meta AI is not launched. However, the EU Commission seems to be unconcerned by the whole thing. According to Business Insider, this reaction from Meta was probably already expected internally. A press release from the Commission states that Meta’s plans have been paused for the time being.
