Meta Quest 3: Standalone VR headset to be released in fall

Facebook parent company Meta has announced a new VR headset: the Meta Quest 3 is set to succeed the Quest 2 in fall 2023, which only made its way to Germany in late 2022.

While the Quest 2 is still one of the best and most successful VR headsets, manufacturer Meta has now announced its successor. The Meta Quest 3 is supposed to mark the manufacturer’s most powerful VR headset to date and offer an even higher wearing comfort thanks to a 40 percent thinner casing.

According to the announcement, a next-generation Snapdragon chipset from Qualcomm works under the hood, which is supposed to offer more than twice the graphics performance as its counterpart in the predecessor. The newly designed Quest 3 Touch Plus controllers, which have also improved in terms of ergonomics, are used.

Thanks to TruTouch, an innovative and particularly precise vibration feedback is also promised. The outer tracking rings are no longer needed, so the new controllers should fit better in the hand. The already available Meta Quest Touch Pro controllers can also be used if desired. Hand tracking is already supported out of the box on the Quest 3.

The Meta Quest 3 is compatible with the full Quest 2 catalog and is thus said to support over 500 VR games, apps and experiences. At launch, the manufacturer promises new, even more exciting VR and mixed reality titles. They have already showcased some of the new games in a separate Gaming Showcase.

Meta Quest 2 will be cheaper and stronger

Who still wants to decide for the predecessor, also has reason to rejoice. Because from June 04, they lower the price for the Meta Quest 2 to 349.99 euros for the 128 GB version and to 399.99 euros for the 256 GB version.

In an upcoming software update, the Quest 2 and Quest Pro GPU and CPU will also be updated. It will increase CPU performance by up to 26% on the Quest 2 and Pro, and GPU speed by up to 19% on the Quest 2 and 11% on the Quest Pro.

“We’re also enabling Dynamic Resolution Scaling on both the Quest 2 and Quest Pro, so games and apps can take advantage of the higher pixel density without losing frames,” the manufacturer said.

Price and Availability

The Meta Quest 3 mixed reality headset is scheduled for release in the fall of 2023. Get going for the base model with 128 GB of internal storage at a price of $499. The German website lists the VR goggles for 569.99 euros. Other models with more memory are to be offered at launch. On September 27, the manufacturer wants to reveal more details about Meta Quest 3 at a Meta Connect.
