MSI Spatium M480: SSD hard drive with active heat sink presented

Fast mass storage has been conspicuous by its absence in the hardware and peripheral manufacturer MSI’s portfolio so far. The company now wants to make up for this shortcoming with the MSI Spatium M480 SSD, which is supposed to enable read speeds of up to 7,000 MB/s thanks to 3D NAND Flash.

MSI Spatium M480 with focus on gamers

With the brand new Spatium M480 PCIe SSD, MSI is targeting content creators and gamers in particular, delivering the fastest representative of the Spatium product line to date. Up to 6800 MB/s transfer speeds in sequential write and 7000 MB/s are on board with the SSD, which relies on PCIe Gen 4 and NVMe 1.4.

Technologies like a 2 GB DRAM cache buffer and an SLC cache are supposed to additionally increase the performance for demanding users. A bronze-colored aluminum heat sink provides the necessary cooling. Here, the MSI Spatium M480 relies on a Phison PS5018-E18 controller with 96-layer 3D NAND from Micron.

In total, MSI relies on three models with M.2-2280 form factor in three capacities for the M480. There is a choice of 500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB variants, which are supposed to come to 1,400 TBW (Total Bytes Written). The Taiwanese state the mean time between failures (MTBF) at 1.6 million hours.

Prices and Availability

Initial models of the MSI Spatium M480 are already available in stores. The 1TB-sized model starts at €189.00, while the variant with 2 terabytes of storage has an MSRP of €379.00. The smaller 500 GB variant is currently not listed at any retailer.
