MWC 2019: Nokia 9 Pureview With Five Main Cameras Unveiled

HMD Global, which owns the licensing rights to the Nokia brand, also unveiled its latest flagship at Mobile World Congress (MWC). The Nokia 9 Pureview sets itself apart from the competition by its cameras.

First Smartphone with Penta Camera

The camera concept of the Nokia 9 Pureview differs significantly from competing devices, where users can choose which of the built-in cameras they want to use. The Nokia 9 Pureview, the first smartphone in the world to feature a Penta camera, does not have this option. Instead, the smartphone automatically composes an image from the five individual shots, each with 12 megapixels resolution. According to Nokia, this should lead to outstanding quality, especially at Bokeh and sharpness, and enable an unprecedented dynamic in smartphones.

Two of the five sensors have a Bayer-Matrix for color images. The other three sensors can only take monochrome pictures. The sensors with a Bayer matrix provide a balanced color representation for the images that are always taken with HDR, while the other sensors provide the sharpness information.

When combining a single image from the five shots of the cameras, the white balance and exposure are adjusted for each shot. Since the information of the individual five images is also stored in the metadata in the final shot, it is possible to change the focus point of the image afterwards. If desired, the recordings can be saved in DNG format. This simplifies the subsequent post-workmanship on the smartphone or on the computer.

Components Not at the Current High-End Level

The other components of the smartphone are good, but the Nokia 9 Pureview doesn’t move at a real high-end level.

The smartphone has a built-in Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, currently the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. The RAM of the smartphone is 6 GB, the internal memory offers 128 GB capacity. The 5.99-inch OLED display offers a resolution of 1,440 x 2,880 pixels. In addition, a fingerprint sensor and the possibility of registration by face scan is also available.

Android 9.0 Pie is used as the operating system. The manufacturer guarantees the provision of security updates for a period of three years, large function updates are guaranteed for two years.

The smartphone will be available in March. In the USA, the price is expected to be 699 dollars, in Germany 649 euros.
