In the USA, divorce has been available online for some time now, but from now on marriage is also possible via video conferencing – at least in New York.
The city of New York in the state of New York is particularly hard hit by the corona virus. There is a nationwide quarantine order so that authorities & Co are closed. Probably in reaction to the corona pandemic, the authorities in New York have decided that from now on marriage is also possible via video conference. This was announced by New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Couples no longer have to go to the registry office, but can simply connect to the responsible official via smartphone, tablet or PC. It is not known what the data protection situation is and which of the many possible platforms such as Zoom, FaceTime, Skype, Google Duo or WhatsApp is used.
It is also not known whether the online marriage in New York will be possible permanently or whether it is only a temporary corona measure.
