Oculus Quest 2: Images of the improved VR headset published

Social media giant Facebook has published pictures of the new generation of its VR headset. On it you can see the Oculus Quest 2, which is supposed to offer some improvements in contrast to its predecessor. The most significant are probably the stronger processor and the higher resolution.

Facebook has published product videos

The company around founder Mark Zuckerberg has published two videos in which you can see the upcoming Oculus Quest 2. In the new generation, Facebook not only focuses on a sharper resolution and more performance. In addition, the corresponding controllers of the VR headset have been reworked. Facebook published the videos themselves on its own marketing website. However, an official presentation is still to follow. Since tomorrow, Wednesday, September 16, 2020, the Facebook Connect will take place, one can expect a presentation in this context. In order to ensure that the videos on the marketing website do not anticipate too much information, the company has taken the videos off its site for the time being.

Powerful processor

In the Oculus Quest 2 the powerful Snapdragon XR2 is supposed to work. It was developed specifically for VR headsets and AR headsets. Especially in comparison to the processor of the previous model a significant performance increase can be expected. After all, only the Snapdragon 835 was used in the first generation. The Snapdragon XR2 is supported by 6 GB RAM. The memory of the new VR headset is supposed to be 256 GB. The basic principle of the Ovulus Quest 2 should not change. Unlike competing products, no external hardware is needed. The headset runs independently. But a connection to the computer is also possible. For this, you use the USB output.

Sharper display

The Oculus Quest 2 has slimmed down compared to its predecessor. It is not only lighter, but also smaller than the first generation of the self-contained VR headset. But Facebook has not only changed its size. The peripherals have also been revised. In particular, the company has improved the ergonomics of the two controllers. Most users will probably be pleased with the higher resolution of the display. After all, a sharp display on VR headsets is always conducive to immersion. The Oculus Quest 2 will now offer a resolution of 2K. This means the screen is 50% sharper than it was with the first generation. Which panel Facebook will use and how high the refresh rate will be, we do not know yet.

Release in Germany questionable

Unfortunately an immediate release of Oculus Quest 2 in Germany is currently unlikely. After all, Facebook has currently stopped selling VR headsets in Germany. According to the company, this is due to “pending discussions with German regulatory authorities”. This is to be a proactive measure on the part of Facebook. Possibly this is related to the fact that Facebook recently tied the use of the Oculus Quest to the coercion of an existing account with the social network. This has angered the Federal Cartel Office. The specs of the upcoming Oculus Quest 2 sound very interesting. However, it is not yet clear when the new generation of the Oculus Quest will be launched. It is also uncertain whether we will even be able to buy the VR headset in Germany. But we will keep you up to date.
