PS-VR2: Sony’s VR glasses soon for PC too

The PS VR2 does not appear to be a real success. At least there are still no suitable games for the VR glasses of the PlayStation 5. This is certainly also due to the low sales figures. Or is it the other way around? Perhaps compatibility with the PC could change this? Sony must have thought so too. The PS VR2 will soon be able to be used with a PC.

PS VR2 soon also on the PC

As Sony PlayStation reports in an in-house blog entry, they are currently testing a way to use the PS VR2 on the PC. And apparently they are certain that the project will work. After all, the Japanese consumer electronics expert claims to have a suitable solution ready by 2024. However, it is still unclear exactly how it will work. The limited connectivity of the glasses could pose a problem here, as reported by the website upload.vr.

The VR glasses only have a USB-C port. A suitable adapter would therefore be required for a classic cable connection to the PC. Otherwise, communication between the Sony hardware and the graphics card would not be possible. However, as with the DualShock 5, a wireless connection to the PC could also be used here. The games would then be streamed from the computer to the glasses or console without further ado.

The fight against the lack of games

Let’s not kid ourselves. With its PS VR2, Sony certainly wanted to create VR glasses that would be used exclusively in its own ecosystem. But since the hardware went on sale almost exactly a year ago, it has been pretty quiet. You don’t have to look far to find the cause. There is simply a lack of suitable software, which is why few people decide to buy the glasses. However, it would also not be worthwhile for Sony to commission game studios to develop VR games at the moment. After all, the VR glasses are proving to be a real slow seller. But only with new games could the PS VR2 find new buyers.

Sony is therefore in a tricky situation here. Meanwhile, the Japanese tech company is taking a defensive stance when the sluggish sales figures are held against it. There is talk that the second generation, with 600,000 units sold so far, is selling better than its predecessor. However, it is doubtful whether the company has done itself a favor with the PS VR2. It is not without reason that Eric Lempel, manager at Sony, said in an interview with the Financial Times that the VR glasses belong to a “challenging product category”. Compatibility with the PC could now be a final lifeline to prevent total failure.
