System apps like Samsung Pay, the weather app or the themes were recently plastered with ads, which led to displeasure especially among buyers of the Galaxy S21 series. The Koreans have now announced that the banner ads will be removed before the end of the year.
Samsung system apps ad-free again
Being bombarded with ads on a 1,000 euro flagship smartphone was and still is an absolute no-go for many buyers and possibly one of the reasons why the Samsung Galaxy S21 series could not reach the company’s ambitious goals in terms of sales.
At least in this area, Samsung is now showing some understanding, as Tae-Moon Roh, head of the mobile division, reveals in a statement. The company still plans to remove advertising from the system apps of Galaxy smartphones by the end of 2021 and “listen to the voices of employees and customers”, it says.
It was “looking for new growth opportunities in content and advertising services to strengthen the integrated Galaxy ecosystem experience,” Roh added. However, that didn’t go over particularly well with consumers or the company’s own employees.
The removal of advertising in system apps is to take place with future updates to the One UI software, but Samsung has not yet given a specific date. Will Samsung succeed in regaining the leading position in Europe that it lost to Xiaomi?
