Sennheiser Momentum Sport: Earbuds measure heart rate and body temperature

At CES 2024, Sennheiser presented exciting in-ear sports headphones that can measure heart rate and body temperature thanks to built-in sensors. Now the Sennheiser Momentum Sport are going on sale.

Sennheiser Momentum Sport with innovative sensors

Sennheiser is now following up the high-end Momentum True Wireless 4 in-ears with an exciting sports model. The Sennheiser Momentum Sport combine unique fitness sensors with powerful sound. The wireless earbuds rely on both a photoplethysmography (PPG) heart rate sensor and a body temperature sensor, which can transmit the measured values to most fitness apps and devices.

According to Sennheiser, the inner ear is one of the areas of the body that provides the most consistent data during exercise due to darkness and low light pollution. This should enable consistent and accurate measurement.

The manufacturer promises an accuracy of /- 0.3 degrees Celsius when monitoring body temperature and a recording of the heart rate in BPM (beats per minute) between 30 and 220 bpm, even while the music is coming out of the earbuds.

theheart rate data can be seamlessly connected and integrated with many popular sports devices and apps such as Apple Watch/Health, Garmin Watch/Connect, Strava or Peloton. There is also direct integration with the Polar Fitness ecosystem via the Polar Flow app.

This includes, for example, performance tracking, training analysis, intelligent coaching and voice guidance. The Sennheiser Momentum Sport transmit the data in real time and thus provide fitness data during an ongoing workout.

Unique operation, rich sound

The Sennheiser Momentum Sport is operated via touch sensors with the special feature that the earbuds combine three-axis acceleration sensors with capacitive touch and infrared sensors. This makes it possible to pause or resume music with a double tap on the cheek near the ear, even when wearing gloves.

In terms of sound, the earbuds rely on a newly developed, semi-open acoustic system that reduces the occlusion effect through an acoustic relief channel with integrated ventilation. This is primarily intended to minimize noises such as impact sound, breath and more.

In addition, the semi-open design ensures a natural perception of the surroundings, but also offers active noise suppression, a transparency mode and an anti-wind mode. The Momentum Sport wirelessly transmit via Bluetooth 5.2 and support the aptX Adaptive, AAC and SBC codecs. They are also protected against sweat and water in accordance with IP55.

In terms of battery life, the earbuds offer six hours of battery life and a total of 24 hours for the buds including charging case. In addition to USB-C, the latter can also be charged wirelessly using the Qi standard. Ten minutes on the power allow up to 45 minutes of playback thanks to fast charging.

Price and availability

The Sennheiser Momentum Sport in-ear headphones are now available in the three colors Polar Black, Burned Olive and Metallic Graphite in the manufacturer’s online store and at selected retailers. The RRP is 329.90 euros.
