Sony Xperia 5 IV: Compact flagship smartphone unveiled

The Sony Xperia 5 IV (official product page) is supposed to be the perfect smartphone for creative people. Thus, the latest premium smartphone of the Japanese electronics company wants to convince users of Instagram, YouTube and Co. with the best hardware with features like a real-time autofocus and real-time tracking.

Sony Xperia 5 IV: Replenishment for friends of compact smartphones

When Sony announced its new big top model with the Xperia 1 IV in May, the trade press was more than impressed due to the exciting specs. Among other things, the real optical zoom caused a stir. The sibling, the Sony Xperia 5 IV, is no less exciting. It offers the strong camera module of the flagship and a surprisingly large battery of 5000 mAh.

Especially in view of the smaller form factor, many will be able to do without special features like a variable aperture. A real eye-catcher of the Sony should be the 6.1-inch OLED display. It is said to have improved in some aspects compared to the predecessor. Sony itself says that the brightness values in particular have increased.

Camera performance is Sony’s hobbyhorse

Slowly but surely, it is becoming clear what Sony’s plan is with its premium smartphones. The knowledge that the Japanese gain from the production of their Sony Alpha series in the compact camera sector is namely also increasingly used for the in-house smartphones. For example, the company also has a flagship smartphone with a separate HDMI port in its lineup with the Sony Xperia Pro.

The Sony is equipped with a camera module that consists of three different lenses. All three of them have a resolution of 12 MP each. Although you have to do without some camera features of the big Xperia 1 IV, the camera performance should be more than enough for most people. For example, you get the Eye autofocus, which can recognize and focus on people and even animals in real time. Moving images can be recorded in a maximum of 4K at 120 frames per second.

Case shrinks and battery grows on the Sony Xperia 5 IV

While the camera performance has to be reduced compared to the flagship, Sony even increases the battery capacity. The flagship offers a total of 5,000 mAh, which is another 500 mAh more than its larger counterpart. Sony has also finally taken the criticism of its users and the trade press to heart.

To be more precise, the Sony Xperia 5 IV can now finally be charged via Qi charging surface even without a USB cable. The fact that Sony is more of an exotic when it comes to smartphones is also made clear by the fact that the Sony Xperia 5 IV has a 3.5 mm jack. This is just as unusual in the flagship segment as the smartphone’s expandable memory via microSD.

Flagship processor from Snapdragon

Sony doesn’t let itself be lukewarm when it comes to the processor either. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 from Qualcomm is a powerful piece of hardware in the Sony. It is supported by 8 GB of RAM. The user has a total of 128 GB of storage available ex-factory. The fact that there is no version with more storage does not have a negative impact in view of the expandable design.

Price and availability

The new Sony Xperia 5 IV is supposed to be launched as early as mid-September. The RRP of the compact smartphone is supposed to be 1,049 Euros.
