Teufel has presented a new pair of chic in-ears. With the REAL BLUE TWS, the Berlin-based soundsmith not only promises a devilishly good sound. On top of that, they are supposed to sit comfortably in the ear and be portable. Features such as active noise cancellation along with a practical transparency mode round off the bulging sound package and should make the True Wireless In-Ears the perfect companion – even in noisy big cities.
Great sound in a pocket format
One of the flagship features is certainly the compact format of the REAL BLUE TWS. This allows you to carry the headphones in your pocket at any time. As is typical for TWS, the headphones are stored in a transport case, which also ensures a full battery. Teufel promises that the charging case should allow for a total of two full battery charges of the small in-ears. In total, up to 24 hours of music enjoyment are possible. But the REAL BLUE TWS should not only be convenient to take anywhere.
Thanks to the large 12 mm drivers, which are anything but common for in-ears, they should also have a rich sound in store. Teufel itself promises a neutral sound image that should ensure high levels as well as rich, deep bass. With the help of the silicone attachments included in the scope of delivery, the REAL BLUE TWS already provide pleasant shielding from loud ambient noise without activated noise cancellation.
Hybrid active noise cancellation
By now, even mid-range headphones offer active noise cancellation (ANC). This is hardly surprising, as this feature provides a wonderful retreat in our increasingly noisy cities. The REAL BLUE TWS should also allow you to get out of the way of your noisy surroundings. When it comes to its ANC, however, Teufel isn’t reinventing the wheel either. Here, external microphones are used on the in-ears.
These record and equalize outside noise so that you, as the wearer, are shielded from the outside world. However, Teufel not only relies on the microphones attached to the outside, but also installs a microphone on the inside. With this “hybrid ANC” possible errors such as too loud noise should be eliminated from the world.
Transparent mode for better understanding
What is the opposite of ANC? The so-called transparency mode. This improves the intelligibility of external noise, which is mainly used at the train station, the airport or in simple conversation. In a sense, reverse ANC also uses the microphones of the in-ears. However, they send the outside noise louder to the listener.
Teufel talks about how it should feel like you’re not even wearing the in-ears at that moment. We are curious whether this is also the case in practice. The transparency mode is often very artificial and anything but pleasant. Only high-priced models can score with clear results here.
High operating comfort
Operation, meanwhile, is supposed to be child’s play. Teufel relies on a touch surface on both ear tips for the REAL BLUE TWS. Depending on the touch gesture, different commands are executed. One man’s joy is another man’s sorrow. Touch control for headphones may be a practical thing, but it can also be annoying. At the latest after the first accidental input, you often wish for a classic haptic button.
It only remains to hope that Teufel manages the touch control well or that you can at least deactivate it via an app. About the plugs themselves can then be set many different things. For example, you can switch between ANC and transparency mode without an app. Voice assistants such as Google Assistant or Amazon’s Alexa are also supposed to be in on the action.
