VW ID.1: Car manufacturer announces e-car for less than 20,000 euros

German car manufacturers are finding it increasingly difficult on the domestic market. This is particularly true of the electric car sector. The VW ID.1 aims to change this and, with a price of just under 20,000 euros, should be able to hold its own against the low-cost competition from the Far East.

VW ID.1 comes at a competitive price

Sales figures for electric cars have been at a low since the beginning of the year. Domestic car manufacturers in particular are no longer able to hold their own on the market. This is mainly due to the prices charged by manufacturers, some of which are far too high. Competitors from China simply have the edge here.

VW wants to tackle this problem in the near future. The car manufacturer has now announced that it intends to launch an even more affordable electric car after the ID.2, which will soon go on sale. At 20,000 euros, the ID.1 should also be affordable for the average consumer and thus do credit to the Volkswagen company name.

After the VW ID.2 comes the VW ID.1

The car manufacturer’s timeline has already been outlined. As the company announced back in March 2024, it is planning a major model offensive. However, with the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.7, VW currently has rather price-intensive models on offer. This is set to change at the beginning of 2026. The VW ID.2, which is expected to cost less than 25,000 euros, will then go on sale.

On May 28, 2024, VW officially announced that there will be an even cheaper electric car. The even more affordable vehicle, the ID.1, is set to go on sale in 2027. According to a report by Businessinsider, the project is not new. In fact, VW has been working on the low-cost e-car for some time under the code name “Amsterdam”.

In view of the low price, we are unlikely to see production in Germany. However, VW emphasizes in its announcement that the VW ID.1 will definitely be produced in Europe. This should be “a clear commitment to Europe as an industrial location”, as VW CEO Oliver Blume emphasizes in the press release.

Many unknowns

So far, however, only words are floating through the air. VW has not presented any real details or even pictures. However, the VW ID.1 will certainly be a fully electric subcompact car. After the discontinuation of the popular VW e-UP, the demand for it should definitely be high.
