WhatsApp: New UWP APP for desktop

In the meantime, it is hard to imagine life without WhatsApp. Certainly, the messenger service is criticized here and there, but this does not really seem to shake the success of Facebook’s subsidiary. Until now, the messenger was primarily intended for mobile use via smartphone. If you wanted to use WhatsApp on your computer, you had to connect your smartphone. As if that were not enough, the service is now launching a new UWP app that is supposed to change everything. In addition to a fancier look, this one offers far more features and finally more freedom.

Desktop use only with smartphone

A sole use of WhatsApp on the computer was not yet possible. Your smartphone with a matching account always had to be nearby. This could now soon be an end. Just recently, Facebook launched its so-called multi-device beta. This optional feature is supposed to make it possible to use WhatsApp on the computer without having to have an active connection to the smartphone. This is supposed to be made possible in particular by saving “linked devices”. In view of this possibility, it is hardly surprising that WhatsApp now wants to launch a completely revised version of its desktop application. It is called “WhatsApp Beta”. The UWP app can already be found in the Microsoft Store. Once downloaded, you can install it on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

A practical new start

Taking a look at the client previously available for Windows, the differences seem really striking. The new app is simply a completely new application. It should not only look different, but also offer more functions and better performance thanks to UWP. In terms of appearance, the UWP app can hardly be distinguished from other programs that can currently be used on Windows computers. This does not only refer to the appearance, but also to the operation. For example, you can also use Windows Ink in the beta. Consequently, WhatsApp’s web application will probably also support writing with a smart pen in the future. This will result in some practical use cases. It is not only possible to write with a suitable stylus, but also to draw. Furthermore, the UWP-based web app is supposed to include features like a backup. It should also be possible to customize chat windows. We are curious.
