Windows Media Player soon for Windows 11

The latest version of the Media Player is now being rolled out for Windows 11 – for Insiders at least. This means that the previously available “Groove Music” application will probably soon be replaced by an update of the iconic media player.

Comeback after almost 10 years

Windows Media Player is, in a sense, the grand dame of Windows apps. Microsoft last provided the application with an update in 2012. Since then, it has been treated rather stepmotherly. All insiders in the Windows 11 Dev Channel can now enjoy a pre-release version of the new media player. However, the range of functions in the test version is still somewhat limited. So far, you can only play music and videos and create playlists. However, this only affects files that are already on the computer. For example, you can’t play DVDs yet. This and other features will certainly be added. According to Microsoft, they would like to consult with the users of the pre-release version. In particular, the question of which functions of the old version should necessarily be found in the new one plays an important role.

Groove Music has served its time

With the renaissance of its media player, Microsoft is also giving up its Groove Music application. This was a counterpart to Apple’s iTunes. The app has not been further developed since 2017 and is still at the level of that time. It was not only iTunes that the company wanted to compete with. The so-called Groove Music Pass also represented Microsoft’s alternative to services like Spotify. However, since hardly any Windows users were willing to subscribe, Microsoft had to discontinue this service as well. If Microsoft succeeds with the new version of the media player, hardly any user will miss Groove Music. We are already curious to see how the new version will succeed.
