At a global launch event in Munich, Xiaomi today unveiled its latest flagship smartphones for the international markets. The Xiaomi 12T series is characterized by particularly high-quality features, a large battery, and professional cameras. The Xiaomi 12T Pro even houses a camera with a resolution of 200 megapixels.
Xiaomi 12T and Xiaomi 12T Pro in detail
After the camera flagship Xiaomi 12S Ultra together with its strong 1-inch sensor unfortunately does not make it to Europe, the manufacturer remedies the situation with the Xiaomi 12T series. Both flagship smartphones are equipped with professional camera systems that are supposed to provide excellent results.
However, the rest of the features are also impressive. The MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Ultra SoC is used in the case of the Xiaomi 12T, while the Pro model relies on Qualcomm’s leading Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.
Pro cameras in the 12T series
However, the focus of the Xiaomi 12T series is mainly on the cameras. For example, the Xiaomi 12T Pro relies on a main camera with a resolution of 200 megapixels and is supported by groundbreaking hardware and Xiaomi’s own advanced AI algorithms. Here, Xiaomi uses the Samsung ISOCELL HP1 sensor in a 1/1.22-inch format, which already realized such a high resolution in the Motorola X30 Pro unveiled in August.
This should enable the 12T Pro to achieve excellent image quality and ensure low-noise pictures even under difficult lighting conditions, for example at night. The camera also has a 2x zoom inside the sensor, which is supposed to be particularly suitable for portraits.
Presumably, this should, similar to the 2x zoom in the iPhone 14 Pro (our review) simply cut into the high resolution of the main camera via cropping. ProCut and Ultra Burst are supposed to help with smart cropping and creating professional content. Even videos in 8K resolution are possible.
In addition to the 200-megapixel main camera, which features optical image stabilization and boasts a fairly open aperture of f/1.69, the Xiaomi 12T Pro offers two other rear-facing cameras:
- 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with 1/4-inch sensor (f/2.2, 120-degree field of view)
- 2-megapixel macro camera with 1/5-inch sensor (f/2.4)
The selfie camera of the flagship smartphone resolves with 20 megapixels and offers an aperture of f/2.4.
The cameras of the 12T
On the regular Xiaomi 12T, a few sacrifices have to be made when it comes to the cameras. The ultra-wide-angle, macro and selfie cameras are the same as in the Pro model, but the main camera has a resolution of 108 megapixels and uses the Samsung ISOCELL HM6 sensor in a 1/1.67-inch format. An aperture of f/1.7 is offered, and optical image stabilization is also available.
The technology of the Xiaomi 12T and 12T Pro
However, apart from the pro cameras, the Xiaomi 12T and Xiaomi 12T Pro have a lot more to offer. Both smartphones measure 163.1 mm x 75.9 mm x 8.6 mm and weigh just over 200 grams (202g for the 12T, 205g for the 12T Pro). The display of both models is protected against scratches thanks to Corning Gorilla Glass 5.
The display itself is also identical. Here, Xiaomi uses a 6.67-inch CrystalRes AMOLED DotDisplay in a 20:9 format with a resolution of 2,712 x 1,220 pixels and an adaptive refresh rate of 120 Hz, which adjusts between 30 Hz, 60 Hz, 90 Hz and 120 Hz. The touch rate is up to 480 Hz.
The displays offer a typical brightness of 500 nits, as well as up to 900 nits at peak, and a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1. HDR is also offered, as well as an adaptive reading mode.
The battery of both models has a capacity of 5,000 mAh and can be charged quickly with the help of the included 120-watt charger. The battery is supposed to be fully charged from 0 to 100 percent in just 19 minutes. Furthermore, the devices learn the daily charging routines with Xiaomi AdaptiveCharge and thus optimize the battery’s longevity. Wireless charging, on the other hand, is apparently not offered.
Both smartphones also feature two stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. The speakers of the Xiaomi 12T Pro have been optimized by Harman Kardon. Dual SIM, NFC, Bluetooth 5.2 and 5.3, 5G and Wi-Fi 6 are also offered.
Furthermore, the Xiaomi 12T and 12T Pro differ in terms of the installed chip. The Xiaomi 12T is powered by MediaTek’s leading chipset – the MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Ultra, which is manufactured using the 5nm TSMC manufacturing process. The chip features an all-new GPU structure that boosts performance and power efficiency by up to 30 percent compared to the previous model.
The Xiaomi 12T Pro, on the other hand, relies on Qualcomm’s latest top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, which is manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 4nm manufacturing process and boosts CPU and GPU performance by 16.7 percent and 11 percent respectively compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, while reducing power consumption by up to 33 percent.
The 12T adds 8 GB of fast LPDDR5 RAM, as well as a choice of 128 GB or 256 GB of UFS 3.1 system memory, while the 12T Pro even offers 12 GB of RAM in the top configuration. MIUI 12 is used as the operating system, which is based on Android 12.
