Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold – foldable smartphone

Xiaomi has launched its first foldable smartphone, the Mi MIX Fold. It comes with an 8.01-inch WQHD display internally and a 6.52-inch external display. This makes the Mi MIX Fold the largest foldable display in the smartphone market to date.

Innovative and foldable display

The Mi MIX Fold is Xiaomi’s first foldable smartphone and features a U-shaped hinge design. In this regard, it can also score points in terms of weight as it weighs almost a third less compared to other foldable smartphones. To test the reliability of the Mi MIX Fold, it was folded 200,000 times as well as 1,000,000 times under extreme conditions and held up. The 8.01-inch OLED display resolves in WQHD+ and offers a 4:3 aspect ratio, making it the largest foldable smartphone on the market so far and even capable of outperforming some tablets. The tablet’s size makes it suitable not only for leisure but also for work.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold has an internal and external display. The internal display offers a color accuracy of JNCD≈0.29 and reaches up to ΔE≈0.35, which has been precisely tuned by Xiaomi’s color calibration algorithm. The brightness of the display peaks at 900 nits and the maximum continuous brightness is 600 nits, so optimal viewing is supported in a wide range of situations. The color contrast ratio of the Mi MIX Fold is 4,300,300:1, supports Dolby Vision as well as HDR10+, while the DCI-P3 color space ensures lifelike and dynamic images in vivid colors.

The external display is a 6.52-inch AMOLED display, with a refresh rate of 90 Hz, HD+ resolution for an optimal user experience, and a touch sampling rate of 180 Hz. The external display comes in at a 27:9 aspect ratio and has a color accuracy of JNCD≈0.55 and ΔE≈0.52, with a peak brightness of 900 nits and a maximum continuous brightness of 700 nits. With Xiaomi’s AI algorithm, the two displays can render images in very high resolution and also double it (from 720p to 1440p) and triple it from 480p to 1440p for videos.

Quad speakers

The sound system has been further improved by Xiaomi to the previous models, so the Mi MIX Fold has received a quad-speaker setup. The speakers are symmetrically designed, housed on both sides of the screen, and have a 0.65-mm amplitude and a 1.34-cc equivalent sound cavity. The speakers’ characteristics are amplified by the 15V Smart PA, which make the sound level up to 40% louder than it is on the Mi 10 Pro. The quad-speaker array algorithm realizes a spatial reproduction of a 3D audio field, thus creating a spatial 3D audio listening experience. With perfect color reproduction and 3D panoramic sound system, the Fold offers immersive entertainment.

Liquid Lens and Two Cameras

For the first time, the Surge C1 processor was used for image processing, the chip brings high performance and requires little CPU and memory space. In addition, the Mi MIX Fold is the first smartphone with liquid lens technology (Liquid Lens), whereby one lens can practically take over the function of two. This makes it possible to capture micro details up close and also targets in the distance. The Mi MIX Fold has a main camera and an ultra-wide-angle camera. The main camera is a 108MP pixel camera with a 7P lens. The 123° ultra-wide-angle camera comes in at 13MP and supports Smart Switching for an extra-wide field of view.

Performance without sacrifice

The battery of the Mi MIX FOLD holds 5,020 mAh and is charged to 100 percent in 37 min. Xiaomi uses the dual-battery parallel architecture here, where two batteries with a capacity of 2,460 mAh and 2,560 mAh work with a parallel connection. It also supports 67 W fast charging, and the technology used achieves a conversion rate of 97.5%. In addition, CNT battery technology has been introduced in the MI Mix Fold to enable fast and safe charging as well as to increase the battery life.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 is the most advanced 5nm processor and improves the GPU, CPU, and AI performance of the mobile platform while reducing the power consumption of the smartphone. The 3,200MHz LPDDR5 memory with high-speed UFS 3.1 flash memory provides the perfect complement. For cooling the components, Xiaomi uses a butterfly cooling system that combines thermal gel, multi-layer graphite plates, VC liquid cooling and other heat dissipation methods.

Availability and Pricing

The Xiaomi Mi MIX FOLD comes in a special ceramic edition and the standard variant and will be available in China starting April 16. In terms of price, it is priced at around 1,300 euros with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage, around 1,430 euros with 12 GB RAM and 512 GB storage, and 1,690 euros for the model with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage.
