Apple fans and technology enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the next generation of iPhones. With the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, major innovations are on the horizon. iPhone 16 series: release in September 2024
September is traditionally characterized by the new iPhone generation. This will probably also be the case for the iPhone 16 series. There is currently no specific date, but as Apple usually releases the iPhone on a Friday, September 20 or 27 is considered likely.
Specifically, the new generation will once again comprise four devices:
- iPhone 16: standard model
- iPhone 16 Plus: standard model with larger display
- iPhone 16 Pro: Premium iPhone
- iPhone 16 Pro Max: Premium iPhone with larger display
Larger displays expected
According to rumors, the new generation of the iPhone 16 series will feature larger displays. The first images, which have been doing the rounds since April, already show this. Specifically, the screen diagonal is expected to increase by 0.2 inches on almost all models.
The iPhone 16 will continue to be 6.1 inches, while the iPhone 16 Pro will be 6.3 inches. The iPhone 16 Plus will continue to be 6.7 inches, while the Pro Max will be significantly larger at 6 inches.

Current rumors suggest that Apple will install a new OLED panel from Samsung in the iPhone 16, which will be even brighter. The Korean website ETNews speaks of 1,200 cd/m² SDR brightness – an increase of around 20 percent. However, the frame rate for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus should remain at 60 Hz, while the Pro model can reach up to 120 Hz.
iPhone 16 price: What’s changing?
There was no price increase for the iPhone 15 generation in 2023. Apple even lowered some prices. Analysts assume that this year will be different and that you can expect another price increase. The reason for this is said to be the increased production costs. However, there are no concrete details.
What design innovations does the iPhone 16 offer?
In terms of design, the new iPhones will also undergo some changes. The thinner display edges will be particularly noticeable, giving the devices a more modern look. The casing is also expected to be revised, although these are likely to be subtle adjustments. These design changes will help to make the new models look fresher and more contemporary without losing the proven Apple aesthetic.
The displays will be almost completely bezel-free, while Apple will once again rely on titanium for the frame, which has been reworked after the problems with the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
According to rumors, the Action Button, which made its debut in the Pro models last year, will now be found in all four iPhone 16 variants. The Pro devices are also set to receive a Capture Button – a dedicated shutter button for the camera.
The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will also come in seven new colors. These include black, blue, pink, yellow, green, white and purple, as well as other special colors for the Pro models.
Camera innovations
The cameras in the iPhone 16 series are to receive significant upgrades. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max in particular are expected to be equipped with a five-fold optical zoom, which was previously only available on the Pro Max model.
A new telephoto lens and an improved ultra-wide-angle lens should also ensure even better images. These improvements promise higher image quality and more flexibility when taking photos, which is particularly interesting for photography enthusiasts.
There is talk of a 48 MP ultra wide-angle camera and an even stronger optical zoom, while the image quality in low light conditions is also said to have been improved.
The cameras of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are now also said to be vertically aligned. According to MacRumors, the cameras are also said to be less susceptible to lens flares and ghosting, which further improves image quality in difficult lighting conditions.
iPhone 16: Chip and technical innovations
According to rumors, all four new iPhone 16 models will use the new A18 chip, after only the Pro models were equipped with the new chip in previous years, while the normal iPhone and Plus still used the previous year’s version.
The difference is that the chip in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will carry the suffix “Pro” and will therefore be able to do more – although it is not yet clear exactly what the differences are. Furthermore, all A18 chips are to be manufactured using the 3-nanometer process and therefore work even more efficiently.
At the same time, the battery capacity of all four iPhone models is set to increase. This is said to be due to a new manufacturing process (stacked battery), which should allow larger batteries without making the smartphones thicker.
There is also talk of advanced AI functions that will be used in various areas such as photography, voice control and general user experience. Apple Intelligence is set to play an important role in the iPhone 16 series.
This includes upgrades for the Siri voice assistant and a word processor. AI will also be used in Apple Music to automatically create playlists based on various inputs or preferences. The iPhone 16 will also be the first Apple smartphone to be delivered with iOS 18.
Is an iPhone Ultra coming?
Another rumor includes a so-called iPhone Ultra, which is said to be even better than the Pro models in terms of performance and features. Similar to the Apple Watch Ultra. However, there is no concrete information on this and this rumor is actually considered rather unlikely.
iPhone SE 4: Affordable iPhone with the look of the 16 model?
Apple is also working on an iPhone SE 4, which could also be released as early as 2024. According to the Chinese leaker Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo, the successor to the SE from 2024 will have a very similar back to the iPhone 16.
It is therefore conceivable that the new SE 4 could also come with a dual camera. According to the leak, the main camera will have a resolution of 48 megapixels. It will also feature an OLED display with a frame rate of 60 Hz, support Face ID and offer a screen diagonal of 6.06 inches. The Apple A18 chip is also said to be working under the hood, with 6 to 8 GB of RAM.
