Acer: New gaming monitor reaches 2,000 nits thanks to mini-LEDs

After it was recently leaked that Samsung wants to launch a new premium monitor that relies on mini-LEDs (we reported), Acer is now following suit. The expert for PC hardware wants to release a gaming monitor whose backlight is supposed to make amazingly high contrasts possible thanks to mini-LEDs. The reason for this is the combination of great black levels and a high brightness of up to 2,000 nits. The positive overall picture is rounded off by a screen diagonal of an impressive 49 inches. We take a closer look at the new presentation.

A dream for every gamer

Acer makes no secret of the fact that the new screen is an uncompromising gaming monitor. This becomes even clearer when you take a look at the technical details. First and foremost, the focus is on immersion. Acer achieves this thanks to a size of 49 inches, which are distributed over a screen format of 32:9. A resolution of 5,120 x 1,440 pixels should ensure that you don’t have to do any annoying pixel counting directly in front of the screen. However, we already know these specs from other representatives of the gaming sector. However, hardcore gamers might be tempted by the impressive maximum brightness of up to 2,000 nits. This is possible thanks to the modern mini-LED technology.

With its new monitor, Acer puts itself in direct competition with Samsung. After all, the Koreans have a monitor on the market with their Odyssey G9, which is very reminiscent of Acer’s new presentation in terms of technical details. Besides the VA panel with a size of 49 inches, the curvature radius (1,000 R) also matches. Gamers will not only be happy about the immersion of the Acer EL491CRG9. On top of that, AMD FreeSync Premium and Nvidia G-Sync point to great gaming experiences. The positive overall package is rounded off by a refresh rate of an impressive 240 Hz.

Also suitable for creative professionals

Those looking for a monitor that not only provides a premium gaming experience, but can also be used for productive work, should also be happy with Acer’s new model. After all, the 10-bit panel covers the DCI-P3 color space by 95 percent. In combination with the high refresh rate and the wide format, the monitor should also be ideal for video editing and processing. Let’s not fool ourselves. Acer enters a completely new technology field with mini-LEDs, which sounds very promising. The backlight is supposed to be dimmable thanks to 2,048 different LEDs. According to Acer, this results in high contrasts as well as a pleasantly bright reproduction of HDR content.

Especially users of multiple screens might be happy about the 32:9 format monitor. After all, it replaces two side-by-side 27-inch screens due to its landscape format and sheer size. The connections are also impressive. Besides three HDMI 2.0 ports, the large monitor also offers DisplayPort 1.4. On top of that, it comes with a practical USB hub and an AUX port. Last but not least, Acer also integrates 2 stereo speakers, each offering 3 watts of power.

Price and Availability

A look at the page of the Chinese online retailer Taobao shows that you can already buy the Acer EL491CRG9 at a price of the equivalent of just under 1,900 euros. However, we do not yet know when the giant gaming monitor will be launched in this country. Acer has also not yet commented on the European prices.
