Apple Intelligence: German launch uncertain

Apple Intelligence is the next big step in the Apple world. However, all signs currently indicate that Apple’s in-house AI will not be launched in this country for the time being. Other new features of iOS 18 are also affected by the problem. The reason for the impending delay is the provisions of the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Apple Intelligence not in the EU?

There was a great deal of excitement when Apple presented not only the new features of iOS 18, but also the possibilities of Apple Intelligence at its WWDC 2024. Anyone already looking forward to the AI features for the iPhone is now in for a bit of a shock. Apple has made it clear to Bloomberg that the release in Germany is currently uncertain. The “regulatory uncertainties” are probably still too great.

This refers to the regulations that the DMA prescribes for companies like Apple. As things stand, certain features of the software update are therefore unlikely to be available on German devices in 2024. This emerges from a public statement from Apple itself. The functions described include Apple Intelligence and other features.

Focus on interoperability

The DMA stipulates that so-called gatekeepers must guarantee a certain interoperability of their features. Due to their great market significance, the iOS and iPadOS software can undoubtedly be classified as such gatekeepers. This is certainly causing the tech company to worry. After all, Apple fears that the “integrity of its own products could be compromised”.

There are also concerns about data protection and the general security of customers if the system is opened up to third-party providers. Incidentally, this will not only cause problems for the iPhone and iPad. Other functions planned for iOS 18, such as live screen mirroring from iPhone to Mac, are also affected. Now we can only wait and see whether Apple can reach an agreement with the EU on a solution soon.
