Apple iOS 16: Rumors point to always-on display

The iPhone may certainly be ahead of its Android competition in many disciplines. In particular, many do not want to miss the software in the form of iOS once they have used it. However, there are also features that Apple’s iconic smartphone still cannot offer. For example, an always-on display. This has become indispensable in many Android devices and also in the Apple Watch. However, we have not yet been able to see it on an iPhone. The tech company from California probably wants to change this with iOS 16. There are namely first signs that the iPhone 14 should finally also offer the possibility to display a permanent homescreen.

With iOS 16 should come a lot of new

According to insiders, Apple wants to introduce a few new exciting features with the update to iOS 16. Some of these are expected to be significantly different from previous versions. According to a report from Bloomberg, it should be about several construction sites within the smartphone operating system, which Apple is revising. This does not only include the notification bar. On top of that, the lock screen is supposed to get a new look and/or a different functionality. The latter should, for example, be able to be customized so that widgets can also be displayed on it. Apart from several small things, the most exciting innovation will definitely be the always-on display. Especially in connection with the new display options of the lock screen, this sounds quite interesting.

An always-on display is when the smartphone permanently displays certain information. In particular, an icon for received notifications as well as time and date are typical here. Thus, a smartphone with an always-on display can also be used conveniently as a clock on the nightstand. In view of the many advantages that this brings, it is surprising that smartphone manufacturers have only been using this technology for a short time. The reason is that an always-on display only makes sense when an OLED panel is installed in the device. Otherwise, the feature would simply “eat up” too much battery. Thanks to OLED, however, smartphones do not have to illuminate the entire backlight of the display, but only the pixels in question.

Always-on-Display only a premium feature for now?

Since Apple has given its in-house smartphone an OLED panel since the iPhone X, the question naturally arises as to why they didn’t think of integrating an always-on display sooner. We will probably not get a suitable answer to this question anytime soon. After all, it seems to take a while until Apple is really convinced of a feature. This is also evident in the integration of widgets, which are still relatively new in the Apple universe. Even though even mid-range Android devices now offer always-on displays, Apple’s counterpart will probably only be reserved for premium devices for the time being. According to the insider source, only the iPhone 14 Pro and the larger iPhone 14 Pro Max will benefit from the modern display technology.

The normal iPhone 14, which will certainly also play in the flagship class in terms of price, would thus be out. However, this could once again indicate a display difference between the Pro models and the standard model. The iPhone 13 Pro (Max) already offered the ProMotion technology compared to the iPhone 13. This enables an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. Especially the adaptability of the refresh rate is optimal for always-on displays. Finally, the battery can be conserved by lowering the refresh rate. Apart from the new features, not much is supposed to change in the general looks. Since Bloomberg has already proven to have reliable sources in the past, we are sure that the rumors about iOS 16 are true.
