Parking spaces in a big city are usually few and far between. This should be no different in the German capital Berlin. Nevertheless, the Senate has decided to change the parking fee regulations (ParkGebO). From 2023, this will also allow bicycles or motorcycles to be parked in parking spaces.
In Berlin park bicycles, e-bikes and more in the future particularly convenient
“The Senate has decided in its meeting today on submission of the Mobility Senator Bettina Jarasch the Fifth Regulation to amend the Parking Fee Ordinance (ParkGebO),” it says in the press release of the city of Berlin.
Thereby changes with the change of the PerkGebO coming into force from 01 January 2023 a whole quantity. However, one point in particular is the most interesting:
Bicycles, pedelecs, cargo bikes, light motorcycles as well as motorcycles may be parked in parking lots (“traffic areas of stationary traffic”) from next year. And that still free of charge.
Thus one wants to animate the users to an increased use of the parking lots and keep at the same time the footpaths free – or, as it is called in nicest official German:
“In this way, keeping the pedestrian traffic areas free as protected spaces for the weakest road users* is supported and traffic safety on pedestrian traffic areas is increased.”
Remains only to hope that annoyed motorists in search of a parking space do not get the idea, the bicycles, e-bikes or motorcycles placed there without further ado simply umzuparken. That should certainly become interesting.
