At CES 2023, Alienware presented new gaming notebooks. One of them is the Alienware m16, which comes in the top 2023 configuration with state-of-the-art hardware like an Intel Core i9-13900HX and Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090. Another highlight is the 16-inch display, which offers an impressive 480 Hz refresh rate.
Alienware is setting itself up broadly
Alienware, Dell’s gaming brand, has a lot to offer at this year’s CES in Las Vegas. For example, the 18-inch Alienware m18 celebrates its comeback. On the other hand, the Dell subsidiary proves that it can also be more compact with its Alienware x14 R2, the thinnest gaming notebook on the market. Besides these and other gaming highlights, the manufacturer has a real gaming power machine in the pipeline with the m16. In terms of its design, the 16-inch notebook is reminiscent of a smaller version of the m18, which should certainly make it a bit more suitable for everyday use for many, as it not only comes across as more compact, but also significantly lighter.
Alienware m16 with 480 Hz display
As is typical for Dell in general and Alienware in particular, you can choose between different equipment options when it comes to hardware. Let’s start with the display alternatives. On the one hand, there is a screen with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels (FHD+). If you want more from the Alienware m16, you can go for the higher resolution display with 2,560 x 1,600 pixels (QHD+). There are not only different resolution options. Furthermore, you can choose between 165 Hz, 240 Hz and 480 Hz for the refresh rate.
What all display options have in common is a very good brightness of 300 nits. According to Alienware, the displays also offer the common variable refresh rate (VRR) options with AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-SYNC. Of course, there is also freedom of choice under the gaming notebook’s hood. You can choose between three different CPUs from Intel. Intel Core i7-13650HX, Intel Core i7-13700HW and Intel Core i9-13900HX are available as possible options.
The processor gets support from up to 64GB of dual-channel DDR5 RAM. Alienware also specifies a maximum storage space of a proud 9 TB, which is supposed to come in the form of a fast SSD. Of course, the Dell subsidiary doesn’t skimp on the graphics power of the Alienware m16. The base model already has a graphics card from Nvidia’s new 4000 series with the GeForce RTX 4050. In the top configuration, there is an RTX 4090 with a full 16 GB of graphics memory under the hood.
Price and availability
The connectivity is also very good. Thus, the Alienware m16 offers 1x LAN port, 1x 3.5 mm jack, 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, 1x DC-In-Power, 2x Thunderbolt 4, 1x HDMI 2.1, 1x Mini-DisplayPort, 1x SD card reader. The ports are distributed on the left side and the device’s back. The battery of the notebook has a capacity of 86 Wh.
The RGB lights on the back as well as the keyboard are certainly a visual highlight. Those who are interested in the Alienware m16 won’t have to wait too long. It is supposed to be launched together with the bigger m18 in the first quarter of 2023. Of course, the whole thing won’t be cheap. According to Alienware, the m16 will cost an impressive $2,599 for the basic configuration. AMD fans, on the other hand, will have to wait a few more weeks. The US manufacturer promises that an AMD-equipped model will be released in the second quarter.
