Diodra S3 is said to be the lightest e-bike in the world

E-bikes have a major problem – the weight is usually significantly higher than that of non-motorized two-wheelers. A Romanian start-up now claims to have solved this Achilles heel. With the Diodra S3, the supposedly lightest e-bike in the world is rolling towards us. The reason for the low weight is the choice of material, which is rather unusual.

Diodra S3 relies on bamboo

An e-bike weighing just 15 kg? The Diodra S3 shows that this is possible. It uses a frame made of bamboo, which is said to be more sustainable than alternatives with a carbon frame. To protect the material in wind and weather, the start-up uses a total of three different layers of paint.

In addition to reducing weight, the bamboo is also intended to improve ride comfort. The manufacturer describes the wood as providing “exceptional vibration damping”. Visually, the sporty e-bike scores with a pleasingly clean design.

The cables are skillfully hidden in the frame. There is also no display. If you want to view riding parameters in real time, you can connect your smartphone via a mount. There should also be a suitable app.

Motor with 250W and a range of 100km

The brushless motor is located on the rear wheel hub and probably offers a power output of 500W ex works. In this country, however, we will receive a model adapted to the EU directives, in which the power is reduced to 250W. The Diodra S3 uses a torque sensor to ensure that the drive accelerates very smoothly. A total of three support levels are available.

A 300 Wh battery is also located directly next to the motor. This should give the e-bike a range of just under 100 km. The rest of the equipment comes from well-known brands and is also impressive. For the tires, for example, the Diodra S3 relies on Continental Contact Speed with puncture protection. Hydraulic disc brakes from Shimano ensure safety.

Price and availability

According to the Romanian start-up, the Diodra S3 is primarily aimed at urban commuters. In view of its low weight, this plan could well work. However, the self-proclaimed label “lightest e-bike” doesn’t quite work. An already available Urtopia Carbon One(test) also weighs 15 kg. However, if you prefer the bamboo look, the Diodra S3 is now available for pre-order at a price of 2,199.00 euros. The subsequent RRP will be 2,899.00 euros.
