Riverside 520E: Decathlon offers affordable e-bike

Once upon a time, e-bikes were considered an expensive means of transportation, reserved only for people with suitably fat wallets. But the market has become richer, which has not only increased the pro-competitive competition. On top of that, manufacturers now produce in very large margins and can pass on savings to the customer. A real value-for-money cracker seems to be the new electric bike from budget sporting goods retailer Decathlon. The Riverside 520E is said to be an all-rounder that feels at home on asphalt, but also the dirt track. Thanks to a range of proud 100 km, nothing stands in the way of an extensive bike tour, at least in theory.

Riverside 520E comes with rear-wheel motor

The comparatively low price of the Riverside 520E can be seen here and there in the technical data. For example, you have to make concessions in terms of weight. With a weight of 22.1 kg in size M, it weighs a whopping 8 kg more than an Urtopia Carbon One (test). However, the latter is made of ultra-light carbon and costs considerably more on top of that. Most people probably won’t find the weight really annoying. After all, Decathlon relies on a removable battery here. That means you don’t have to take the bike indoors to charge it.

When it comes to the drivetrain, the Riverside again relies on a Vision Industrie-branded rear-wheel motor. This is rather atypical in a market where mid-mounted motors currently predominate. In terms of power, however, much seems to be right with 250 watts. Decathlon again states a satisfying 42 Nm as torque. For comparison: the SachsenRad C5 Centro SUV recently tested by us (test) offers 70 Nm. According to the manufacturer, the driver has a total of three differently strong support levels to choose from. Here one gets alternatively a step amplification around 90, 150 or 220 per cent offered. Thanks to the built-in torque sensor, the support should be felt as quickly as possible. On top of that, this prevents jerky drives when starting at traffic lights.

Range up to 100 km

The battery located in the frame with an expandable design offers a capacity of 500 Wh. Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not place the battery in the frame. Instead, the battery is located below the down tube. This ensures that you can tell the Riverside 520E is an e-bike at first glance. To ensure safety, the battery mount has a lock.

With its help, you can easily protect the battery from thieves. If the manufacturer is to be believed, the e-bike offers a range of a good 100 km. Thus, it is virtually predestined to be used on the weekend bike tour. The other components are supposed to provide a correspondingly high ride comfort. Thus, the Riverside 520E relies on a gear shift with a total of eight gears and hydraulic disc brakes from Tektro.

Price and availability

A small downer is the narrow scope of delivery. Thus, there is only the standard market lighting in addition. Accessories such as a practical luggage rack for the city and mudguards you have to buy separately. The Riverside 520E is designed for a total weight of 120 kg and is available now at an MSRP of 1,399.00 euros.
