DJI Action 2: Actioncam comes with 4K slow motion recording at 120 FPS

“More than action” writes manufacturer DJI about its newly unveiled action camera DJI Action 2. The exciting competitor to the GoPro Hero 10 Black actually has a lot of exciting features under its belt and aims to score with impressive image quality despite its small dimensions.

The DJI Action 2’s features

With the DJI Action 2, the manufacturer has introduced its most powerful action camera to date. The robust outdoor action cam measures just 3.9 x 3.9 x 2.2 centimeters and weighs a mere 56 grams thanks to an aluminum alloy.

It is operated via a 1.76-inch touchscreen on the back of the camera, which offers a resolution of 446 x 424 pixels at a brightness of 500 nits. The DJI Action 2’s only button is on the top, so the goal is clear: to create the simplest action cam possible. On the bottom is an innovative magnetic clasp that connects the camera to all accessories.

The front of the Action 2 is dominated by a lens with an ultra-wide field of view of 155 degrees and a fast aperture of f/2.8. Behind it sits the 1/1.7-inch format sensor that captures photos with a resolution of 12 megapixels.

Videos, on the other hand, can be recorded in 4K resolution at a maximum of 120 frames per second, and at a bit rate of up to 130 Mbps. Thanks to the innovative “HorizonSteady” stabilization technology, there should be no camera shake even at breakneck speeds. Camera shake and rotation are corrected in real time.

However, this is only possible for video recordings at resolutions of up to 2.7K. Otherwise, the already familiar DJI Rocksteady 2.0 stabilization takes effect.

Battery life and everyday usability

DJI specifies the battery life of the DJI Action 2 at around 70 minutes with 1080p video recording at 30 FPS and without image stabilization. The battery has a capacity of 580 mAh. Alternatively, the manufacturer also offers a battery module that can be connected to the magnetic connector on the bottom and has a capacity of 1,300 mAh. This is supposed to achieve three times the runtime.

The robust Action 2 camera is drop-proof, dust-proof and waterproof up to a depth of 10 meters. In combination with a waterproof case, dives up to 60 meters are possible. The touchscreen and lens are made of Gorilla Glass and are thus said to be resistant to scratches.

microSD memory cards with a maximum size of 256 GB are supported. In addition, the Action 2 communicates wirelessly with smartphones and other devices via WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0.

Price and Availability

The DJI Action 2 can be pre-ordered now via the manufacturer’s website or on Amazon, with delivery set for November 4. The manufacturer’s RRP is 399 Euros for the so-called “Power Combo” bundle. It includes the camera, the battery module, a power cord, a magnetic strap and a magnetic adapter mount.

Alternatively, a “Dual-Screen Combo” is also available, which costs 519 Euros. Instead of the battery module, a front touchscreen module with another touch-sensitive screen on the front is included, which is also equipped with a 1,300 mAh battery.
