Manufacturer DS Automobiles has unveiled its latest model, the new DS 3. Similar to the DS 7 in June, the small 3 also relies on a new design and comes as DS 3 E-TENSE also fully electric.

The new DS 3 unveiled

At the start of Paris Fashion Week, the French at DS Automobiles unveiled the new DS 3. It is said to mark a milestone in its segment in terms of design, technology and electrification. The DS 3 Crossback becomes the new DS 3.

The compact French car is based on a new design that makes it look more modern and sporty. In terms of the grille, the DS 3 reflects the manufacturer’s design language and features (depending on the model) a glossy black or chrome-colored diamonds in the grille. The characteristic DS Wings have been adapted to underline the grille and front lights.

The new LED lights are standard on the DS 3, focusing on a dynamic design and giving the French car a sharper look, consisting of three modules. The DS Matrix LED Vision offers intelligent control and an automatic main beam that enhances comfort and safety. The redesigned daytime running lights consist of two LED lines arranged vertically.

New technology for the DS 3

The DS 3 has also undergone some technical changes. The spoiler and grille have been completely redesigned to further improve the car’s aerodynamics. Even the badges on the grille are ruled by attention to detail.

The rear section has also been overhauled and is now on a par with the new DS 7, with a more modern and refined look. The same applies to the wheels, which feature a new design that also offers increased efficiency. They are offered in 17 or 18 inches and are to be adapted to the respective model in terms of design.

The new 100 percent electric DS 3 E-TENSE features 18-inch TOULOUSE Tall & Narrow Class A+ wheels. Offered in seven different colors (opaque, metallic and pearlescent), the car comes in two new pearlescent paint colors: Diva Red and Lacquered Grey.

Interior in luxury look

The interior of the new DS 3 also presents a modernized look. In the choice of materials, the aim is to achieve a distinctive look characterized by excellence, innovation and sustainability.

Here, nappa leather, Alcantara and details such as the “Pearl” stitching go hand in hand. The position of the driver has also been adjusted, thanks to the new steering wheel and a regrouping of the controls for the driving aids and the infotainment system. The steering wheel offers additional shift paddles for the automatic transmission.

A new 10.3-inch HD screen in the center console is now standard. It is equipped with the new DS IRIS system for infotainment. All seats are said to impress with a high level of comfort and offer improved lateral support. A new high-density foam is used here to improve comfort.

The front seats are heated and offer a lumbar massage function. They are also electrically adjustable and can be adjusted fore and aft, up and down, while the backrest and lumbar function can also be adjusted electrically.

Technology that inspires

The DS IRIS system in the 10.3-inch infotainment system offers navigation and intelligent voice recognition. In addition, the central screen and 7-inch instrument panel can be customized. With the help of a head-up display, important information is projected directly onto the windshield, into the driver’s field of vision.

The main screen is divided into 12 squares, while the size of the widgets displayed can be customized. Even the two-part instruments can be adjusted relatively freely. Setting and customization is done via voice input and that in 40 different languages or optionally via touch control.

Via the main screen, VISIO PARK 2 also allows a 360-degree panoramic view, made possible by the new high-resolution digital cameras. There is also a camera behind the windshield as standard, which enables various driver assistance systems. These include a lane departure warning system, traffic sign recognition and an active emergency braking function up to 85 km/h.

Efficient powertrains

In terms of powertrains, the new DS 3 focuses on efficiency. DS Automobiles has been regarded as the brand with the lowest CO2 emissions in Europe since 2020, and this approach is continued in the new model, which is offered in three drive variants: Electric, gasoline and diesel.

The e-car model, DS 3 E-TENSE, gets a brand-new engine that builds on the manufacturer’s expertise in Formula-E. The gear ratio and battery have also been revised and improved.

The new hybrid synchronous motor (HSM) offers 115 kW (156 hp) and 260 Nm of torque at 400 volts. The battery has a capacity of 54 kWh, of which 50.8 kWh can be used. It also has a thermal control system that allows fast charging through the circulation of liquid and a heat pump, while extending the life span.

The onboard charger reaches 100 kW and charges the DS 3 from 0 to 80 percent in 25 minutes; alternatively, 11 kW can charge from 0 to 100 percent in five hours. Thanks to an optimized architecture and improved energy density, the battery turns out to be more compact and is placed below the front and rear seats and the central tunnel.

As a result, the DS 3 E-TENSE is expected to achieve a range of up to 402 kilometers (according to WLTP). In city traffic, even more than 500 kilometers are said to be possible. The combined power consumption is given as 15.5 kWh/100km.

Alternatively, the DS 3 is also available as a gasoline-powered PureTech 100 engine with a 6-speed manual transmission, as well as a PureTech 130 with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and as a BlueHDi 130 diesel with an 8-speed automatic transmission. All engines are said to comply with the latest anti-pollution standards.
