Fairphone Fairbuds launch as TWS earbuds with replaceable battery

Manufacturer Fairphone strives for sustainability in its products. Following last year’s smartphone models and the Fairbuds XL modular over-ear headphones, the Fairphone Fairbuds have now been introduced as true wireless earbuds that are designed to be easy to repair and have a replaceable battery.

The Fairphone Fairbuds in detail

The Fairphone Fairbuds are available in white or black with a charging case. But even at first glance, they are striking: The design is unusual. Measuring 28.7 mm x 24.6 mm x 21 mm, they are slightly larger than most other earbuds, but still weigh just 5 grams per earbud.

A special feature in addition to the sustainable design made from recycled materials is the replaceable battery. This means that not only the battery in the earbuds themselves can be replaced, but also the battery in the accompanying charging case.

What currently still seems exotic is a first step towards the EU directive, which will take effect from 2027. This is because all in-ear headphones will then have to be equipped with replaceable batteries.

The batteries in the Fairphone Fairbuds can be easily removed and replaced. They have a capacity of 45 mAh in the earbuds and 500 mAh in the charging box. Up to six hours of battery life should be possible, and the duo with charging case has a total runtime of up to 26 hours.

Powerful sound and modern features

Fairphone promises that no compromises need to be made in terms of sound and equips the Farbuds with 11 mm drivers that are coated with titanium and cover a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz at 16 ohms impedance. A convincing stability and range is to be achieved via Bluetooth 5.3, but only SBC and AAC are used as codecs.

Active noise cancellation (ANC) and Bluetooth multipoint connectivity with two devices are also offered. A total of six microphones with ambient noise suppression should ensure clear intelligibility.

The Fairphone Fairbuds are operated via touch control and there is also an automatic wearer detection function that pauses and resumes playback when the earbuds are removed from the ear or inserted.

There is also a mobile app for Android and iOS, which can be used to adjust the sound using an equalizer, for example. The earbuds are also fully repairable and IP54 sweat and water resistant. The manufacturer also offers a full three-year warranty.

Price and availability

The Fairphone Fairbuds are now available directly from the manufacturer at a price of 149 euros.
