Fujinon XF30mmF2.8 R LM WR Macro: Compact macro lens from Fujifilm

To go with the new Fujifilm X-T5 APS-C system camera, the manufacturer has also unveiled an exciting new lens. The Fujinon XF30mmF2.8 R LM WR Macro combines a comparatively short focal length with a 1:1 magnification.

Macro lenses are rather rare in the Fujifilm cosmos. Manufacturer Fujifilm itself has so far only offered two macro lenses, which come to a focal length of 60 mm or 80 mm. Now, the Fujinon XF30mmF2.8 R LM WR Macro is a new lens that offers a significantly shorter focal length, but is correspondingly lighter and more compact.

The new macro lens is designed for the manufacturer’s APS-C cameras and comes with the Fujifilm X-mount connection, and is particularly suitable for the high-resolution sensors of the X-T5 and the Fujifilm X-H2.

The focal length of 30 mm is therefore equivalent to around 46 cm when converted to 35 mm or full-frame. This is almost exactly what the human eye sees.

At the same time, the XF30mm achieves a reproduction scale of 1:1, thus enabling macro shots in real size. Focusing is already possible from a distance of 10 centimeters (calculated from the sensor). This means that you can get very close to the object in question. The lens focuses just 1.2 cm in front of the lens.

With its short focal length of 30mm, the Fujinon XF30mmF2.8 R LM WR Macro is of course rather less suitable for macro photography of insects or animals, but probably finds use in product photography as well as plants, objects and more.

Lightweight and compact

Another advantage of the Fujinon XF30mmF2.8 R LM WR Macro’s short focal length is in its case. This is because the macro lens weighs just 195 grams and turns out comparatively compact with a length of 69.5 mm.

Nevertheless, Fujifilm installs high-quality technology and relies on 11 lens elements in nine groups. Three aspherical lenses and two ED elements also prevent aberrations. An aperture range of f/2.8 to a maximum of f/22 is possible – as usual with Fujifilm, the whole thing can be set not only via the camera itself, but also on the aperture ring of the lens. The filter thread comes to a size of 43 mm – so you need quite small ND, polarizing or UV filters.

The autofocus of the new lens is said to be very fast, according to the manufacturer. The linear motor is said to be able to focus in just 0.02 seconds and silently at that. As usual for the high-quality Fujinon XF lenses, the new macro lens is also made of metal and protected against dust and splash water. Temperatures of -10 degrees Celsius can also not harm the lens.

The Fujifilm Fujinon XF30mmF2.8 R LM WR Macro lens will be released on November 17, 2022, coinciding with the new X-T5 camera. The recommended retail price is €699.00.
