Google’s Pixel 6a, which the manufacturer unveiled at the I/O developer conference, is a more compact sibling of the Pixel 6 that is similar in size to Apple’s iPhone SE. Design and performance are similar to the Pixel 6, but the cameras have to make sacrifices.

Google is expanding its 6th generation Pixel smartphone series with an additional, compact model. The new Google Pixel 6a comes with a screen diagonal of 6.1 inches (compared to 6.4 inches for the Pixel 6) and features a Full HD+ resolution of the OLED panel. The refresh rate of 60 Hz is lower than that of the Pixel 6 with 90 Hz.
The smartphone is equipped with the same high-performance Google Tensor chip, which offers numerous advantages especially in the field of machine learning. Google provides it with 6 GB of working memory and 128 GB of system memory. There is no more storage or expansion via microSD card. The fingerprint sensor is once again invisibly installed in the display.

Otherwise, the Google Pixel 6a relies on a 4,410 mAh battery that should last for more than 24 hours. In extreme energy-saving mode, even a total of 72 hours is supposed to be possible.
Other features include Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 and a 5G modem. Android 12 is used as the operating system, and the smartphone is also supposed to be supplied with security updates for five years.
At least in terms of bare specs, the cameras have to accept some compromises. On the back, the 6a relies on a dual camera, which consists of a 12.2-megapixel wide-angle and a 12-MP ultra-wide-angle lens (for comparison: the Pixel 6 has 50 MP in wide-angle and 12 MP in ultra-wide-angle).
However, the smart features like the magic eraser, Night Sight night mode or Real Tone for real skin tones are still there. For the selfie camera, the same 8 MP front camera is used as in the big brother.
Price and availability
The mid-range Google Pixel 6a smartphone will be available for pre-order directly from Google starting July 21 and will go on sale July 28. The smartphone will be offered in the colors Sage (green), Chalk (gray-white) and Charcoal (dark gray). The RRP for Germany is 459.00 Euros. The Google Pixel 6 is currently on sale, for example at Amazon for 555.00 Euros.
