Google Pixel 9: Leak shows images, Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL planned?

Google is expected to make a new attempt in the battle for smartphone leadership in October with the Pixel 9 series and, as befits its status, should once again be at the forefront, particularly in terms of camera quality. A new Pixel 9 leak now not only provides details on the modernized design, but also holds out the prospect of three devices. In addition to the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, Google is also expected to offer a Google Pixel 9 Pro XL this time.

Google Pixel 9: New design and three models?

With the Pixel 8 Pro, Google delivered a coherent overall package last year that impressed almost across the board in our test. In the fall of 2024, we are likely to see the successors, which, according to a new Pixel 9 leak, will not only feature a new design, but will also be joined by a third variant.

The well-informed leaker @OnLeaks is once again the source of the rumors, having published render images of the Google Pixel 9 Pro via Twitter/X. These are in line with the previous leak from January 2024, which holds out the prospect of a new smartphone design.

Two design changes immediately catch the eye. Google’s new generation of smartphones will feature a frame with flattened edges, similar to those used on the Apple iPhone 13 or iPhone 14, before the Cupertino-based company moved away from this again with the current iPhone 15 models.

The second obvious change concerns the design of the rear cameras. In contrast to its predecessor, the strongly protruding camera bank will no longer extend across the full width of the device, but will converge and end at the edges.

Pixel 9 gets smaller, Pixel 9 Pro XL planned

According to the leak, the dimensions of the Pixel 9 will be 152.8 mm x 71.9 mm x 8.5 mm. This would make the smartphone 2.3 mm taller and 1.1 mm wider, but also 0.4 mm thinner than the Pixel 8. In combination with the camera strip, the device will be 12.5 mm thick.

The screen diagonal of the Pixel 9 is said to be 6.03 inches, which is slightly smaller than last year’s model. Compared to the Pro model, which was already leaked in January, the telescopic zoom camera and the temperature sensor, which we already know from the 8 Pro, are once again missing.

The leak also states that, in addition to the Pro model, Google will also offer a Google Pixel 9 Pro XL variant with a 6.65-inch display. This would mean that the 9 Pro would also be as compact as the non-Pro version.

A compact and handy flagship smartphone in the style of the iPhone 15 Pro. In the Android segment? That would be something. Especially as ASUS has now also jumped on the bandwagon of giant devices with the Zenfone 11 Ultra.

Technical data on the Google Pixel 9 model series is still scarce. What is known is that Google wants to improve performance and efficiency once again with a new Tensor G4 chip. In addition, the new devices will support the Qi2 standard and can therefore be charged wirelessly with up to 15 watts, while magnetic accessories can be used.

Until then, we will have to wait for the Pixel 8a mid-range smartphone, which is rumored to rely on really powerful hardware. It could be unveiled at Google I/O 2024 on May 14.
