Huawei Mate X3: Premium foldable at a high price

The Huawei Mate X3 will also come to Germany. The Chinese tech giant has now officially presented its amazingly thin foldable smartphone. Is this a serious competitor for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 from Samsung?

A drumbeat in terms of technology

Huawei’s Mate series always produced the in-house flagships. The Chinese do not seem to change this principle with their latest coup. The technical specs of the Huawei Mate X3 in particular should make the hearts of technology fans beat faster. They even outshine the previous industry king Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. Let’s take a look at the features. The Mate X3, which was already announced for China in March, comes with a powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 from Qualcomm. It is supported by a considerable 12 GB of working memory. The foldable’s 512 GB internal storage is supposed to offer space for a lot of files.

The charging technology also sounds really cool. Thereby, the wired fast charging function with 66 watts is certainly very good, but almost standard in the upper class. The option of wireless charging with up to 50 watts sounds more exciting. In a direct comparison with Samsung’s rival, Huawei’s Mate X3 scores with its slim design at first glance. It is pleasingly thin with a thickness of 11.1 mm. The Fold 4 is considerably thicker with just under 15 mm. With a weight of 239 g, it is also 24 g lighter than the competition. However, Huawei’s modern hinge might be particularly annoying for Samsung. It is not possible to see that the hinge is even present when the device is opened.

Huawei Mate X3 wants to show off when it comes to the display

The biggest role in a foldable plays of course the display. And here, too, the manufacturer wants to show off. The Mate X3 offers two displays. The main screen measures a respectable 7.85 inches. Huawei relies on OLED technology, 120 Hz and a resolution of 2496 x 224 pixels. The specs of the 6.4-inch secondary screen also read very well. It also features OLED and 120 Hz. In terms of resolution, there is 1,080p+.

Not only a camera module consisting of 50 MP main camera, 13 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and 12 MP periscope telephoto camera should ensure snapshots in high quality. In addition, selfie cameras with a resolution of 8 MP are used for both displays. Huawei has obviously also done a good job in terms of resistance. Protection according to IPX8 standard ensures that you do not have to worry about the damaging penetration of water.

Prices and availability

It all sounds very good, what Huawei wants to get going with its Mate X3. However, the usual downer remains. Of course, this smartphone also comes with the shortcomings that the manufacturer’s other devices also have. This means that buyers will have to do without the 5G mobile standard, which is now common for many smartphones. On top of that, there is of course neither Android OS nor the associated services like the Google Play Store. However, this should not deter Huawei fans.

The pre-order of the foldable smartphone is now possible. A corresponding delivery should then start from May 22, 2023. Who is interested in the device, but must also accept a horrendous price. You can pre-order the Huawei Mate X3 on Amazon for 2,199.00 Euros. You can choose between the colors black or dark green. There is also a goodie when ordering from Huawei’s own store. If you order directly from the Chinese tech company, you will get a matching smartwatch in the form of the Watch GT 3 for free.
