IFA 2019: Huawei Shows Kirin 990 SoC with 5G

Huawei presented a new processor for mobile devices at the IFA in Berlin. The Kirin 990 offers 8 cores promising more performance and higher efficiency than the Kirin 980. In addition, a version was presented which has already integrated 5G.

The eight cores of the SoC consist of two Cortex A76 cores with up to 2.86 GHz, two with up to 2.36 GHz and four Cortex A55 cores with up to 1.95 GHz. The SoC without 5G unit clocks a little slower. A Mali G76 GPU with 16 cores and Intel Smart Cache is responsible for the graphics power.

The Kirin 990 has a reworked AI unit that is supposed to recognize people in videos in order to change the background live. Also with photos and videos this should lead to improvements, thus the picture noise should be reduced and the picture quality should be raised to DSLR level.

For the first time the Kirin 990 will be installed in the Huawei Mate X and Mate 30. There we will then see whether the AI can really improve the photos and videos so much again.
