Instagram subscription model enters test phase

The new Instagram subscription model, which we already reported on in November 2021, is entering its first test phase. At the start, a total of ten influencers will participate, whose channels will be featured with a premium subscription including a monthly price.

The Instagram subscription in the premium model for individual channels is a done deal. As Mark Zuckerberg himself has confirmed, ten influencers are currently participating in the first alpha test run.

In return for paying a monthly fee, followers receive exclusive access to certain content such as live videos and stories from their starlets, who can be recognized by a special purple ring. Subscribers, however, not only get to enjoy exclusive content, but also receive a special badge that shows them as premium followers in the comments of subscribed accounts.

Mark Zuckerberg writes in a Facebook post:

“This will help content creators earn more by offering their most engaged followers benefits like access to exclusive Lives and Stories.”

Prices up to $99.99

In terms of pricing for the paid Instagram subscription, influencers have free choice. Like Techcrunch reports, Instagram is offering a total of eight categories. It starts at a monthly price of $0.99, while the highest category calls for $99.99. Per month, mind you.

All revenues are to be paid out in full to the creators until at least 2023. Passing on the exclusive content, for example as a screenshot, is a violation of the social network’s terms and conditions.

As part of the first test run, however, important tools are still missing that would give influencers an insight into the premium subscribers, as it is further stated. Accordingly, an overview in Instagram’s Analytics Dashboard is currently still missing, but this and other features are to follow for the final launch of the Instagram subscription model.

The first step in the alpha test is to collect feedback from fans and influencers in order to further develop the new premium model.
