iPhone 14 eSIM: Will the Apple smartphone come without a sim card slot?

About three months after the release of the iPhone 13 generation, the rumor mill is already bubbling over the successor models. The iPhone 14 Pro could do without the unpopular notch (we reported), but another potential innovation might not appeal to many. According to current rumors, Apple could do without a sim card slot in the iPhone 14.

iPhone 14 eSIM: Without physical sim card slot?

Rumors have been surfacing again and again for a week now that Apple could do without a sim card slot on the iPhone in the future and rely exclusively on eSIM. What started last weekend as a rumor for the iPhone 15 has now been hinted at by a leaker for the upcoming iPhone 14.

As MacRumors, citing an anonymous source, reports, Apple is said to have already informed mobile carriers in the U.S. to prepare for smartphones without a slot for sim cards by the fall of 2022.

The tipster had even submitted a credible document detailing the timetable – though without explicitly naming Apple or the iPhone brand in it. U.S. wireless carriers should be gearing up for “eSim only” smartphones in September 2022, it says.

As part of the transition process, some providers are expected to offer iPhone 13 models without a nano-SIM card included starting in the second quarter of 2022, it adds. Apple’s website, as well as Apple Stores, have already moved to sell the current smartphone model without a SIM card, it said. The eSIM can currently be activated when the iPhone is started and connected to a WLAN.

It remains to be seen whether this will actually be the case for the iPhone 14 generation launched in September 2022 and worldwide, and whether Apple will no longer install a SIM card slot. Especially since eSIM is not yet available in all countries.

Leaker confirms iPhone 14 eSIM rumors

At the same time, leaker Dylan, who is highly regarded in the Apple community, has confirmed the rumors via Twitter. On the short message service he shares that he “agrees with the recent rumors about the omission of a physical SIM card slot in the iPhone”and had already informed about corresponding rumors in February 2021.
